Nabta Health (nabtahealth.com) discovers new ways for women to prevent, identify and manage non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The growing epidemic of NCDs threatens the ambition of countries around the world to achieve sustainable, universal access to health and universal health coverage for their populations. NCDs also leave populations more susceptible to communicable diseases such as COVID-19. Moreover, NCDs remain underesearched and underserved in women. Until the mid-1990s, clinical research and clinical trials largely excluded women. Today, women using drugs that were approved pre-1994, are 50–75% more likely than men to suffer adverse reactions to those therapies. Ironically, a significant proportion of the drugs in this category are those designed to treat or manage NCDs. Examples include statins and potassium channel-blockers used to manage cardiovascular disease or hypoglycaemic drugs such as Rezulin used to control diabetes. Standardising and personalising the ways in which women identify and manage NCDs in the context of their own lifestyles and health goals, and through the use of applied machine learning and Artificial Intelligence, will improve clinical outcomes and make cutting-edge healthcare affordable and accessible for all women.
