Optical microscopy continues to be the tool of choice for the zebrafish research community. However, capturing clear images of relevant biological phenomena still remains a challenging task. It is not possible to simultaneously image a wide area and maintain high resolution using current microscope technology. At Ramona Optics, we are developing a new patent-pending gigapixel microscope that can capture cellular-scale resolution (5-10 µm) in 3D over an entire 100 mm diameter Petri dish. This unprecedented resolution/field-of-view combination opens up a new horizon for high-throughput, non-invasive imaging of the motion, behavior and activity of unconstrained organisms. Our microscope acquires high-resolution gigapixel images (with 1 billion pixels) in a single snapshot. This new capability frees researchers from the historical limitations imposed by classical optics, which typically can only capture megapixel-scale images from a small sample area.
