About the Role:
This role is intended to help deliver a change in platform from CentOS 7 to the latest Ubuntu for the ICV
application, and to verify the software porting and build process for the system.
Your Profile:
This role is suited to an engineer who enjoys building device-side software on Linux-based edge devices and deploying solutions that operate reliably in real-world, mission-critical environments.
You will be responsible for developing platform support (scripts, services, installers, ISO images) for Ubuntu Linux. You will integrate the product range with Linux networking stacks, video recording and streaming solutions, Bluetooth services, security and AI libraries, and hardware peripherals including TPMs, GNSS/GPS receivers, GPIO interfaces, and cellular connectivity modules (4G/5G).
The systems you build will be deployed at scale and must meet the expectations of public-sector customers, most notably law-enforcement organizations, where reliability, security, and data integrity are paramount.
The role involves working across the full development lifecycle, including requirements definition, system design, implementation, testing, deployment, and operational support. You will collaborate closely with backend, platform, and QA engineers for configuration, installation scripts, logging, provisioning, customer support, and evidence handling.
Prior experience in Ubuntu Linux is essential.
Essential Skills and Experience:
Strong proficiency in Linux (Ubuntu) setup, installation and configuration
Experience using scripting languages such as Python or shell to support development, testing, or deployment
Proficiency with Linux development environments, ISO imaging, debugging, profiling, Git and build systems
Solid understanding of networked systems, including TCP/IP, UDP, HTTP/S, TLS, and device-to-cloud communication
Demonstrated experience building long-running device-side services, agents, or daemons
Experience working with secure systems, including encrypted communications, secure storage, and system hardening
Comfortable working in an Agile development environment and collaborating across disciplines
Expertise with virtualization technologies (Docker, VirtualBox or Hyper-V)
SALT Master, SALT Client installation on Linux systems
Remote OS Set-up and configuration, AWS iOT, Kinesis, MFA/2FA
Desired Skills and Experience: (The following are an advantage)
Experience with web backend integration
Basic knowledge of HTTP servers, databases, and SQL queries
Knowledge of embedded and device security, including secure boot, certificate management, hardware-backed key storage (TPM), and encrypted communications
Experience working on large-scale connected device fleets
Familiarity with Linux networking internals and performance optimization
Knowledge of common network architectures (routers, switches, proxies, etc.)
Excellent troubleshooting skills using network analysis tools
Demonstrable ability to plan and manage own timelines and deliver applications on time and in line with business needs
Excellent presentation, communication, and documentation skills, together with the relevant tertiary qualifications
