About the job
Tutcart is building products that help learners, families, tutors and education partners connect and get things done. We’re a startup: priorities move quickly, the problems are real, and there’s room to shape how things work. We’re looking for a curious, entrepreneurial QA Engineer who sees quality as a team sport and a product advantage. You’ll help us ship with confidence while building the habits, tools and automation that let a small team move fast.
The opportunity
This is a hands-on, high-ownership role. You’ll wear multiple hats: explore the product, pressure-test new ideas, write focused checks, investigate production issues, improve release habits and help the team decide what quality means for each change. You’ll work closely with engineering, product and operations, jump into unfamiliar areas, and turn ambiguity into a clear next step.
What you’ll do
- Test real end-to-end journeys across web and mobile, including sign-up, discovery, booking, scheduling, payments and communication. Look beyond happy paths to permissions, state transitions, edge cases and recovery.
- Join early in discovery and delivery: ask sharp questions, clarify acceptance criteria, identify risk and suggest simpler or safer approaches before code is finished.
- Build the right level of coverage for the risk, combining thoughtful exploratory testing with maintainable UI, API and lower-level automated checks.
- Reproduce and explain issues clearly, using concise steps, expected and actual behavior, environment details and evidence. Help engineers get from report to root cause quickly.
- Own quality improvements end to end: strengthen regression checks, improve CI feedback, spot patterns in customer feedback and production signals, and close the loop after incidents.
- Adapt as the company grows. Pick up adjacent work, unblock teammates and improve lightweight processes without creating ceremony for its own sake.
- Use AI coding assistants and agentic tools to speed up test design, generate data, explore scenarios, analyze failures and maintain automation. Validate their output critically, protect sensitive data and keep human judgment accountable for release confidence.
What you bring
- Experience testing and shipping web products, with strong exploratory instincts and a practical automation mindset.
- A builder’s attitude: you take initiative, are comfortable with ambiguity, and turn challenges into experiments and measurable improvements.
- Good product judgment: you can prioritize by user impact and risk, and explain trade-offs clearly in a fast-moving environment.
- Experience with browser developer tools and API testing; working knowledge of an automation framework such as Playwright, Cypress or Selenium.
- Clear written communication and a habit of making findings reproducible and useful to the whole team.
- Curiosity about AI-assisted and agentic workflows, plus the discipline to verify results rather than trust generated output blindly.
Bonus points
- You’ve helped establish QA practices at a startup or small product team.
- You’ve tested marketplace, education, scheduling, payments or communication products.
- Familiarity with SQL, CI pipelines, mobile testing, accessibility or observability.
You’ll thrive here if you like moving from a customer problem to a test idea to a shipped improvement, enjoy learning outside a narrow job description, and take pride in helping a team move quickly without losing sight of users. This is a full-time role with the option to work in office or remotely.
To apply, share an example of a tricky quality problem you owned: how you found it, what you tried, and what improved as a result.
