About the job
- Build the networking systems that let multiple systems operate as a coordinated local AI cluster
- Design high-bandwidth, low-latency data paths for multi-node inference and agentic workloads
We’re inviting an experienced systems software engineer to join our core team at Mother, building our first computer, the Mother I. We are looking for a self-starter who is a highly motivated and autonomous operator to join us at our Mountain View office.
What is Mother?
We are tool builders. Our mission is to create tools that enable endless creativity and amplify our inherent human abilities.
What is Mother I?
Too much of today’s AI compute is concentrated in the hands of a few large companies. We believe in local and open-source AI—your AI should truly be your own.
Mother I is an AI supercomputer designed to run a wide range of open-source models locally. At its core is a software stack that makes it remarkably easy to run models and perform powerful tasks—directly on your own machine.
What you’ll do
- Build networking systems for running models across multiple Mother systems
- Support intra-node tensor parallelism across local GPUs and inter-node pipeline parallelism across multiple Mother systems
- Design and optimize high-throughput, low-latency activation transfer between systems while keeping weight-heavy execution local
- Work with RDMA/RoCEv2, GPUDirect RDMA, NVIDIA ConnectX-7-class NICs, dual-port 200 Gbps links, and PCIe Gen 5 x16 bandwidth
- Measure and improve throughput, latency, jitter, CPU overhead, memory-copy behavior, congestion, and failure recovery
- Build observability and diagnostics for NIC behavior, RDMA fabric health, GPU memory movement, and multi-node inference performance
- Work across the stack from Linux and hardware-aware systems to inference runtime, model serving, and agentic workloads
What you bring
- 4+ years of experience designing, building, and operating production-grade systems end-to-end
- Strong systems programming fundamentals and experience working deeply in Linux environments
- Experience building networking, distributed systems, infrastructure, or hardware-aware software where latency and reliability matter
- Strong understanding of networking concepts such as TCP/IP, RDMA, RoCE, InfiniBand, Ethernet performance, routing, proxying, queues, congestion, or distributed protocols
- Strong programming experience in C, C++, Rust, Go, Python, or similar systems languages
- Ability to translate ambiguous infrastructure needs into concrete, reliable engineering solutions
- Comfort navigating and solving complex, open-ended problems
- A mindset oriented toward experimentation, iteration, and rapid validation
Nice to have
- Experience with GPUDirect RDMA, CUDA-aware networking, NVIDIA ConnectX NICs, NCCL, UCX, DPDK, kernel networking, or NIC tuning
- Familiarity with AI infrastructure, model serving, distributed inference, tensor parallelism, pipeline parallelism, or training clusters
- Experience with PCIe, NUMA, DMA, kernel bypass, memory pinning, or hardware-aware performance work
- Interest in on-device, edge, local-first, or hardware-adjacent AI systems
- Strong sense of ownership with a bias for action
- Ability to quickly learn and apply new technologies in evolving domains
Tech stack
Python · Rust · PyTorch · Linux (Ubuntu/Debian) · C/C++ · NVIDIA networking/GPU infrastructure
Perks
