Senior Software Engineer – AI Tools & Skills

• Build the tools, integrations, and reusable skills that extend what AI can understand and do
• Design systems that let AI reliably interact with workflows, APIs, MCPs and external services

We’re inviting an experienced, generalist AI software engineer to join our core team at Mother, building our first computer, the Mother I. We are looking for a self-starter who is a highly motivated and autonomous operator to join us at our Mountain View office.

Mother I is an AI supercomputer designed to run a wide range of open-source models locally. At its core is a software stack that makes it remarkably easy to run models and perform powerful tasks—directly on your own machine.

What you’ll do

• Design and build AI-powered tools and skills that extend what Mother I can understand, automate, and accomplish
• Develop robust APIs and services in Python and Rust, using async/await and modern concurrency patterns
• Build systems and integrations let AI interact reliably with tools, workflows, files, apps, and external services
• Create reusable capabilities that transform complex user needs into repeatable, high-quality AI actions
• Work across the stack—from agent/tool interfaces to backend services and user-facing product experiences
• Partner closely with product and design to turn ambiguous ideas into shippable AI-native workflows

What you bring

• 4+ years of experience building and operating production-grade software systems end-to-end
• Experience designing backend systems, APIs, or platforms that support tools, integrations, automation, or developer workflows
• Strong ability to go from ambiguous product ideas to working systems
• Solid CS fundamentals and strong programming experience in Python
• Experience writing performant, concurrent, and reliable services
• A desire to experiment quickly, test assumptions, and improve systems through iteration
• Comfort solving complex, open-ended problems in fast-moving technical domains

Nice to have

• Experience building AI tools, plugins, skills, agents, or workflow automation systems
• Familiarity with LLM tool use, function calling, retrieval, memory, or evaluation
• Experience with developer platforms, SDKs, APIs, or integration frameworks
• Interest in human-AI interaction, productivity tools, and AI-native software design
• Strong ownership mindset with a bias for action
