Senior Software Engineer – AI Systems

Build the core systems and infrastructure powering on-prem AI deployments

We’re inviting an experienced, generalist AI software engineer to join our core team at Mother, building our first computer, the Mother I. We are looking for a self-starter who is a highly motivated and autonomous operator to join us at our Mountain View office.

Mother I is an AI supercomputer designed to run a wide range of open-source models locally. At its core is a software stack that makes it remarkably easy to run models and perform powerful tasks—directly on your own machine.

What you’ll do

• Build robust, high-performance APIs using Python and Rust, leveraging async/await and modern concurrency patterns
• Design and implement scalable, distributed systems that power on-prem AI deployments
• Tackle complex engineering challenges across the stack—from OS-level systems to application-layer APIs
• Develop services that enable reliable, seamless execution of AI workloads in constrained environments
• Contribute to consumer-facing applications that ship on Mother I

What you bring

• 4+ years of experience designing, building, and operating production-grade systems end-to-end
• Proven track record shipping backend systems to internet-scale or embedded environments
• Ability to translate ambiguous product ideas into concrete, scalable engineering solutions (zero → one)
• Strong computer science fundamentals and deep experience in Python
• Experience writing performant, concurrent code
• A mindset oriented toward experimentation, iteration, and rapid validation
• Comfort navigating and solving complex, open-ended problems

Nice to have

• Experience building backend systems for consumer-facing applications
• Familiarity with on-device / edge AI systems
• Interest in distributed systems, networking, and hardware-aware software design
• Strong sense of ownership with a bias for action
• Ability to quickly learn and apply new technologies in evolving domains
