About the job
Opportunity:
Upwell Water is a tech-enabled water resource and infrastructure company and one of the fastest-growing companies in a $1 trillion market serving one of our most precious resources. We own operating and new-build water supply, treatment, and management assets. We strive toward our mission, to ensure a sustainable water future, by eliminating capital barriers to the adoption of water solutions. As recently featured in the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, and more, we expect to deploy $1 billion near-term.
You will be a key member of the team building and running our water supply business (UW Supply). UW Supply is a major owner of water supply and storage, serving water-stressed regions in the US. In this line of business, we provide new supply, and smooth availability, of water for cities, businesses, and agricultural users. You will join a small team responsible for an existing portfolio of assets and a multi-billion dollar pipeline of opportunities.
Highlights of Responsibilities:
Sourcing & Development
- Sourcing opportunities to purchase or finance water supply assets. That might include sourcing water rights and land, negotiating with developers and other counterparties, and coming to agreements to own and develop water supply sources.
- Working closely with landowners, local governments, and community organizations to enable water supply projects.
- Coordinating with lawyers, permitting specialists, engineers, and scientists to determine whether sites are suitable for development.
Investing
- Contributing to the investment and underwriting of our transactions, including due diligence, financial modeling, legal review, documentation, negotiation, presenting, and deal execution.
Execution
- Executing on project development, such as managing construction activities, permits, etc.
Business Management
- Managing UW Supply as a business, including reporting, overseeing asset performance and growth, and the like.
Requirements and Ingredients for Success:
- Ability to lead development and acquisition transactions, and to manage assets, based on demonstrated track record.
- Experience in land acquisition, development, and management, including experience and familiarity with negotiating land-related deals for leases and acquisitions, and the process of development, from permitting to design/engineering, to contracting. You should have a history demonstrating the ability to manage large-scale projects, preferably in land, real estate, and infrastructure development.
- Bachelor degree required; MBA or JD is a plus but not required.
- Prior experience in water specifically is not required, but water should be at least part of the utility and resource considerations of your past work experience in land / real estate development.
- Examples of job histories that could fit well: energy / resource / real estate firms where your role included securing water and land rights (e.g. midstream water management for an energy company), water rights development, renewable energy development…
Personality: Personality and presence to lead a transaction and run calls and meetings. Fun, high-energy, positive attitude, able to do anything and above nothing.
Location: San Francisco strongly preferred. New York and other locations may be considered.
We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity. All employment is decided based on qualifications, merit, and business need.
