The Role

As an Engineering Manager at January, you will be empowered to independently and cooperatively create solutions that deliver incredible outcomes. You will be responsible for overseeing the development and delivery of high-quality software that will shape the future of our relationships with clients and borrowers. At the same time, you’ll develop a team of 4+ engineers in an environment where excellence thrives.

This position reports directly to the Vice President of Engineering.

Your impact:

  • Lead and nurture a team culture that prioritizes collaboration, support, and inclusivity, fostering an environment conducive to innovation and continuous learning
  • Oversee the design, development, testing, and delivery of high-quality software products
  • Actively mentor and develop each engineer on your team, empowering them to tackle increasingly complex challenges and advance their professional growth
  • Collaboratively shape the future of the systems that your team owns to drive our rapidly expanding business
  • Utilize collaborative decision-making and strategic prioritization to enhance your team’s effectiveness and impact on our projects
  • Work closely with our other Engineering Managers, VP of Engineering, and other business leaders to align on goals, to accelerate development, and to help shape the direction of our growing Engineering team
  • Lead a team developing with Python, Flask, React, and Postgres in an AWS-powered environment.

You may be a fit if you:

  • Have 2+ years of experience managing a team of engineers
  • Were already a talented senior software engineer before becoming an engineering leader
  • Are passionate about mentorship and helping your reports continuously improve, providing feedback about interactions, architecture, coding, career progression, and more
  • Are excited about being an Engineering Manager for a single team, with a potential to expand that role as the company grows
  • Proactively work towards building a diverse team because you recognize the significant impact of inclusivity on innovation and team dynamics
  • Care deeply about thoughtful decision making and refining processes
  • Value written communication as a means for preserving key decisions, documenting processes, and clarifying complex ideas
  • Are comfortable giving and receiving feedback to help foster continuous improvement of yourself, your team, and your peers
  • Strive to get to the heart of the matter when taking action and making decisions to ensure we’re solving the right problems efficiently.
  • Regularly recognize and celebrate your team’s achievements, fostering a culture of appreciation and motivation
  • Build trust with colleagues and approach new interactions with optimism and curiosity, leading to better team collaboration and a positive work environment. January believes in doing its part to help close the wage gap that continues to plague much of the US workforce. We offer transparent and equitable compensation packages to all existing and future January team members.

Our compensation range for the Engineering Manager role is $170,000 to $225,000. We determine the final package by considering experience, applicable education and training, and relevant skills derived throughout our interview process. This role also includes a competitive equity package, giving you a chance to feel true ownership of your work.
