Our web-based application, PrehabPal, improves surgery outcomes in older adults through pre-surgery intervention—also known as prehabilitation. Our approach to prehabilitation is based the clinical expertise in geriatric surgery that was developed and refined at the University of California, San Francisco’s Surgery Wellness Program (SWP). In addition to standard prehabilitation domains such as diet and exercise, this program provides wrap around support that targets common geriatric vulnerabilities such as home safety, anxiety, and polypharmacy.
Frail older adults have unique vulnerabilities that put them at risk for complications and slow recovery. For example, pneumonia affects 20% of the elderly post-surgery, prehabilitation programs have been shown to reduce that number to 4%. Recent studies from University of Michigan and Duke have demonstrated that prehabilitation programs for older adults reduce hospital costs by up to 28%.
