About the job
Who we are
Getting benefits shouldn't feel like a part-time job. For too many families, it does: a stack of forms, a wall of deadlines, and one missing document standing between them and help they already qualify for.
Mirza is changing that. We build public benefits infrastructure that matches people to the programs they're eligible for, helps them apply once across programs, and keeps them covered as the rules shift. That's 200+ programs across all 50 states, including Medicaid, SNAP, WIC, and childcare subsidies.
Government agencies, health plans, health systems, employers, community colleges, and unions use Mirza to reach the people they serve. Unfortunately, the stakes are about to get higher. New federal Medicaid requirements take effect January 1, 2027, affecting roughly 20 million adults, and states need a better way to make sure eligible people don't lose coverage over paperwork. We're building exactly that and we would love for you to join us.
About the role
As our first dedicated Quality Engineer, you'll own how we know our software works. This is a build role, not a maintenance one. You'll define the testing strategy, stand up the automation behind it, and give engineering a fast, evidence-backed answer to "is this ready to ship?" on every release. Some weeks you'll be writing test infrastructure; others you'll be embedded with a delivery team running acceptance testing on something about to ship. You'll join a small team of experienced engineers who care about quality and love to ship, but you'll be the one defining what good looks like.
What you’ll do
- Build and own our automated test coverage, including end-to-end journeys, a smoke suite we trust, and integration coverage across services that talk to each other and to the outside world.
- Test our web application across browsers and devices, including accessibility and the configurable behavior that makes the same product look different to different customers.
- Test APIs, event-driven and asynchronous workflows, and integrations with external systems we don't control, with contract testing, data integrity checks across system boundaries, and coverage for dependencies that are slow, down, or just wrong.
- Test our AI and conversational experiences, where non-deterministic output means building evaluation suites, golden datasets, regression testing across prompt and model changes, and guardrail coverage.
- Run acceptance testing alongside our customer-facing implementation teams during active development, not as a gate at the end.
- Make quality visible with reporting that shows what is and isn't verified, in terms non-engineers can read and act on.
- Raise the bar on the testing engineers do themselves, and bring consistency to how teams define "done."
- Use AI tooling pragmatically to speed up test authoring, maintenance, and triage. We expect our harness to be AI-informed, not hand-cranked.
- Write secure code, help identify and remediate security vulnerabilities, and keep test environments, fixtures, and automation workflows compliant with our access controls and data protection requirements.
What we’re looking for
- 5+ years in quality, test, or software engineering, with real time spent building automation rather than only executing tests.
- A degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Proof you've stood up a test automation practice from a low baseline, without an existing framework handed to you.
- Strong programming skills. You write test code other engineers respect and maintain.
- Comfort across the stack: API and integration testing, headless browser automation, and the CI plumbing that runs it all.
- A pragmatic view of coverage. You reason about where risk actually lives instead of chasing a percentage.
- Confidence learning unfamiliar business logic before you verify it, and asking the questions that expose an ambiguous requirement.
- Clear communication with both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Self-direction across shifting priorities. You'll float across several teams and make your own calls on where you're needed most.
- Experience with test data management, fixtures, and environment seeding for systems with complex data.
- Familiarity with our stack (Python, Node, TypeScript, React, GitHub Actions, AWS, and GCP), plus cloud-native development, modern DevOps, and security best practices.
- Startup experience.
- Introducing quality practice into an organization that didn't have one, including the change management that comes with it.
- Building quality reporting that non-engineers actually used.
- Evaluating or testing LLM-based features (eval frameworks, LLM-as-judge, prompt regression, hallucination and guardrail testing), or using LLMs to generate, maintain, or triage tests.
- Testing rules or decision engines, or any domain where correctness is defined by regulation or policy.
- Performance, load, or contract testing.
- Work in a regulated environment with limits on access to customer data.
We aren't expecting you to be an expert in everything described above. If you check most of the boxes, and are ready to roll up your sleeves and learn, we’d love to hear from you.
