About the job

About the Role
This role is an opportunity for a sharp, self-directed finance operator to own the day-to-day engine of our finance function. This is Carbon Arc’s first dedicated finance hire, reporting directly to our Head of Finance. You’ll inherit a functional accounting stack and a capable external bookkeeper; your job is to professionalize, streamline, and elevate everything you touch.

This isn’t a role for someone who wants to be handed a playbook. It’s a role for someone who wants to write one. You will have real ownership from day one at a company at a meaningful inflection point, direct visibility into fundraising and the full finance function, with a mandate to modernize. We want to leverage AI in finance operations, and we’ll give you the resources to do it, as well as the opportunity to build processes and systems that will scale with the company.

What You’ll Do

Accounting & Cash Operations

  • Day-to-day management of AP/AR workflows across our current finance stack
  • Oversee and actively manage our external bookkeeping relationship, including the authority to assess and recommend changes to that arrangement as the business evolves
  • Own month-end close coordination and financial reporting inputs
  • Evaluate our current tooling and proactively recommend migrations or enhancements that better position us for where the business is going

Payroll, Compliance & HR Finance

  • Serve as the internal point of contact for our PEO, managing payroll cycles and surfacing issues proactively
  • Own state and local tax registrations, filings, and compliance — partnering with outside advisors where appropriate
  • Monitor HR compliance obligations and coordinate with legal and operations as needed

Automation & Process Innovation

  • Lead the identification and execution of finance workflow automation projects, leveraging AI tools and Carbon Arc’s internal technical resources
  • This is a real priority, not a nice-to-have. We have the technical horsepower to execute; we need someone with the finance fluency and initiative to drive the roadmap

Fundraising Support

  • Support the Head of Finance in fundraising efforts as they arise, including diligence support, data room organization, and financial ops hygiene

What You’ll Bring

Required

  • 5–8 years of finance or accounting operations experience, ideally with some startup exposure
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and energized by ownership (you don’t wait to be told what to do)
  • Technically curious: you’ve explored AI tools, built automations, or at minimum, you’re genuinely excited to
  • Not a rigid, checklist-driven operator (you understand the why behind financial controls and can adapt them to a fast-moving environment)

Preferred

  • A CPA is helpful, but not required; intellectual horsepower and execution track record matter more here

What We Offer

  • Competitive compensation
  • Fully paid healthcare benefits (Medical, Dental, Vision)
  • Remote work options
  • Paid time off
  • Generous parental and family leave policies
  • Strong work culture focused on integrity, transparency and excellence

Location

Carbon Arc is headquartered in New York City and operates as a remote-first company. Team members are expected to travel for in-person onsite gatherings at least one week per quarter to collaborate, plan, and connect as a team.
