About the job
At Give Lively, we build better fundraising tech for nonprofits and give it away for free. We help nonprofits like Malala Fund, Every Mother Counts, and Trans Lifeline raise more for their cause.
As a Data Engineer, you will define and implement Give Lively's data warehouse architecture. You'll take our existing data collection and transformation layer and mature it into a scalable, high-trust environment. You'll be the sole data engineer on our team, with full ownership over architecture and tooling decisions — partnering closely with our Senior Data Analyst.
We are seeking a data engineer for a full-time, 40 hour per week contract role with no end date.
What You Will Do
Architect & Implement: Own our dedicated Postgres data warehouse, separate from our production application database, that reliably moves, stores, and transforms data from disparate sources (Intercom, Google Analytics, etc.) to feed downstream reporting in AWS Quick Sight.
Refactor for Scale: Audit existing SQL and pipeline logic, migrating it into clean, modular, version-controlled models using a modern transformation tool (e.g., dbt).
Verify & Validate: Implement a data testing strategy to ensure our metrics are accurate, resilient, and "fail-loudly" rather than silently.
Data Integrity: Collaborate with our Senior Data Analyst to identify and fix infrastructure gaps, ensuring an accurate single source of truth.
Modernize Tooling: Replace our current custom, application-level data sync jobs with low-upkeep ETL/ELT tooling (e.g., Airbyte, Fivetran) to streamline and stabilize our pipeline.
What we value in an Data Engineer:
- BS in Data Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent practical expertise in data engineering
- 5+ years building and deploying production data pipelines and storage environments, with real ownership of architecture decisions
- Significant expertise in data analysis and/or data modeling
- Hands-on experience with a SQL modeling/transformation tool that supports version control, testing, and documentation (e.g., dbt or equivalent)
- Strong hands-on Postgres skills — performance tuning, indexing/partitioning, and scaling a relational database for analytical workloads
- Experience with ETL tools; familiarity with columnar/cloud warehouses (Redshift, Snowflake, BigQuery) a plus
- Strong knowledge of SQL
- A passion for philanthropic missions and for building great products for users
- A conviction and commitment to improve your own skills and the skills of the team
- Experience with AWS Quick Suite is a plus
