About the job

THIS IS AN UNPAID, REMOTE VOLUNTEER POSITION. Please read carefully before applying.

Background:
Pitch Labs is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that educates, empowers, and inspires young entrepreneurs by providing accessible step-by-step guides, hosting events and workshops, and promoting peer mentorship and development in a community setting. We are 100% volunteer-run and offer all our resources for free online.

Our team at Pitch Labs is working to make entrepreneurship accessible. We strive to redefine who can be an entrepreneur, highlighting that being an entrepreneur is not about having a specific degree but pursuing one's innate curiosity to learn and develop. We strive to rewrite the narrative of what a successful business and entrepreneur looks like, recognizing that struggles are simply steps to success. We strive to help students understand both the value of always being a mentor and mentee and the value of harnessing their creativity regardless of what career they pursue in the future.

How this Role ties into Our Mission & What We Need:
We have hundreds of articles available on our website and are working to create more. The Director of Written Media will primarily be responsible for the supervision and organization of the written media team to most effectively research and create articles that answer questions new entrepreneurs need to know to start their first business. The DWM will also be tasked with ensuring that articles are SEO-optimized, young-reader friendly, and are made accessible to our audience. We are looking for someone with a background in journalism or writing and who is comfortable managing large teams.

**NOTE:* Use of AI to write responses in your application will disqualify it from consideration.

Qualifications:

  • Have prior experience writing and editing in a professional capacity.
  • Understand Search Engine Optimization.
  • Understand laws and regulations around the utilization of Creative Commons and otherwise classified images and works of art.
  • Understand how to establish team workflows.
  • Are comfortable managing a team of 12+ people (cumulative total; inclusive of managers and their respective team members).
  • Must be based in the United States.
  • Must speak and write in professional/native-level English.
  • Must respond to messaging/emails within 24 hours.
  • Experience structuring directing the development of informational content (ideal).
  • Educational and/or nonprofit background (ideal).
  • Creative Direction experience (ideal).
  • Experience writing articles related to businesses or business development (ideal).

BONUS POINTS: If you understand how we can best utilize AI in our writing and editing process while ensuring we only generate high-quality articles and are not penalized in terms of SEO.

Duties/Tasks/Responsibilities:

  • Support team members in creating high-quality simplified content.
  • Ensure all writing and editing is done in line with our brand voice and standards.
  • Implement a robust editorial process, including fact-checking and proofreading, to ensure content integrity.
  • Keep the team updated on the writing techniques, SEO practices, and industry trends.
  • Monitor the performance of articles using analytics tools to track metrics such as traffic, engagement, and conversion rates.
  • Represent the written media team in cross-departmental meetings and initiatives.
  • Conduct regular team meetings to discuss progress, challenges, and future plans.
  • Support the Content Creation Pipeline, and problem solve as needed.
  • Assign team members to tasks that meet personal as well as organizational goals.
  • Lead team/individual 1-1 meetings.
  • Meet weekly with the Executive Director and department’s HRO (human resource officer) to how the team can better be supported.
  • Ensure work to be done is logged on the team's dedicated project management system.
  • Communicate with team members within 24 hours of any requests for help.

Time Commitment: THIS IS AN UNPAID, REMOTE #WFH VOLUNTEER POSITION.

Although this is a volunteer role, given our startup-like functioning, we only seek active volunteers who are energized and ready to engage.

Please be prepared to contribute at least 8 hours a week for at least the next 12 months. As we invest heavily in training each volunteer, we humbly request that if you are unable to meet this time commitment, that you do not proceed with our application further..

All volunteers must attend their department’s team meeting or 1-1 meeting every week. We enforce a 24 hour response policy to promote a smooth workflow and mindfulness towards ongoing projects/deadlines that team members are working on.

We are able to accommodate volunteers who need time off for exams, work, family events, etc as long as these commitments are appropriately conveyed as soon as possible.

Benefits: We are a certified Presidential Volunteer Service Award (United States) organization that can award you certified volunteer hours for the time you work. With longevity, we also give all of our volunteers access to exclusive perks such as: advanced Google Workspace features, the flexibility of working remotely, 1:1 coaching/Q&A sessions with industry experts, resume coaching and guidance, internal educational webinars, public recognition of outstanding work on our social platforms, internal networking, and more!
