Role: Asia Base Metals Analyst, Commodities

Location: Singapore

Position Overview:

Model development

• Drive the development of Squarepoint Asian Base Metal (S&D) balances:

  • Keep track of S&D imbalances and explore the sources of those imbalances.
  • Connect and collaborate with Squarepoint’s metal desk in London to integrate data and findings into the desk view. A particular emphasis should be put on traditional demand drivers and energy transition demand.
  • Create models and scenarios stressing S&D variables and one-off events.

• Onboard new sources of fundamental data for the development and improvement of supply demand models, trade flow matrices and cash markets monitoring. A particular emphasis will be put on industrial and demand data for China and the rest of Asia.

Model monitoring

• Monitor skill of S&D against realized inventories.
• Monitor model inputs to ensure that model results are always to industry-leading standards.
• Monitor changing regulatory environment to include updates into models.

Analysis and trade recommendations

• Participate in industry events and field trips to follow trends and developments.
• Drive fundamental risk modeling of existing trading positions from model.

• Propose, support and follow trade ideas centered around base metals:

  • Generate / update fundamental dashboards on demand or the trading team.
  • Record and track trade ideas through Squarepoint dedicated system.

• Work with the extended research team to synthesize in-house S&Ds forecasts and monitor trade ideas.

Required Qualifications

• Strong understanding of Copper, Aluminum and/or Iron Ore fundamentals in Asia. Specific focus on demand drivers as well as smelting/refining and semi-manufacturing dynamics.
• Solid existing network with Chinese base metal industrials. Knowledge of local vendors is a plus. Knowledge of Indian industry is a plus.
• Good documentation skills (able to properly document models).
• Desire to interact with traders and other analysts on a frequent basis.
• Fluent in Mandarin and English.
