We are developing a wearable medical device that is capable of automatically detecting and reversing an opioid overdose. It is attached with a patch to the abdomen, monitors a user’s vitals, and triggers an automatic injection of naloxone when it detects an overdose.
Our end user is someone actively engaged in recovery efforts while using opioids. People with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) cycle through phases of sobriety, treatment, and use. Many points in this journey (such as leaving inpatient treatment or jail) lead to increased risk for overdose, as the patient’s tolerance is decreased.
The user and the customer are two different people in our case: The distribution of our device will be funded by grants (e.g. from opioid restitution funds), insurance reimbursement, and direct-to-family sales.
