Ever wonder why your throat hurts after surgery? Try an experiment with me. Hold your breath while looking at your watch. How long can you make it before you begin to get uncomfortable? 20 seconds? 30 seconds? Good.
Now imagine that you are a patient, under anesthesia and no longer able to breath for yourself. Your anesthesia provider attempts to intubate you (place a breathing tube into your trachea) but unfortunately, you fall into a portion of the 50MM people intubated every year for which this procedure is not routine. Your provider tries harder. Uses more force and makes multiple attempts. Seconds turn into minutes.
