About In-Pipe Technology

Founded in 1999, In-Pipe Technology provides engineered wastewater treatment technology and services that meet the escalating challenges facing today’s municipalities and industrial clients. In-Pipe Technology’s patented technology and engineered solutions help customers achieve environmental compliance, eliminate noxious odors and corrosion, lessen the impact of fats, oils and grease, reduce operating costs and maximize return on capital expenditures. Rather than passively waiting until wastewater arrives at the treatment plant, In-Pipe Technology begins its proven process by treating the wastewater upstream in the far reaches of the sewer system, closer to the source.

Position Overview: The Environmental Engineer is a full-time exempt position at In-Pipe Technology in Wood Dale, IL. This is an on-site role with potential for work from home 1-2 days a week post training depending on company needs. The position combines engineering analysis with direct client interaction. The engineer will analyze wastewater collection systems using geographic information system (GIS) and field data, lead technical conversations with prospective and current clients, and turn technical findings into clear recommendations for clients and internal teams. Potential work spans In-Pipe Technology’s odor, inflow and infiltration (I&I), and fats, oils, and grease (FOG) programs. We welcome candidates from early career through experienced engineers; title, responsibilities, and compensation will reflect experience.

Is This the Right Role for You?

You’ll likely thrive here if you:

  • Enjoy digging into messy, real-world data (incomplete client GIS files, noisy sensor data) until you reach a defensible answer.
  • Enjoy explaining that answer just as much, whether to a field technician, a salesperson, or a utility director who only wants to know what to do next.
  • Ask good questions before proposing solutions; on a scoping call, you are curious about what the client actually needs.
  • Like working across many projects (I&I, odor, FOG) and seeing how your analysis shapes a client’s results.
  • Want to keep learning: wastewater microbiology, field operations, and how engineering supports the business.

This may not be the right fit if you:

  • Prefer to work heads-down on analysis with little client or cross-team contact.
  • Want one long project at a time; here you will juggle several clients with different timelines.
  • Need fully defined processes; some of our tools and workflows are still being built as the company scales, and you will help shape them.

Key Responsibilities

· Client Engagement & Scoping:

  • Lead technical calls with prospective and current clients to understand their collection system, the problem they need to solve, their regulatory and budget drivers, and the data they have available.
  • Translate client needs into a defined scope of work, data request, and study plan in coordination with Sales and Engineering leadership.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations of technical findings, study results, and recommendations to client audiences ranging from operations staff to utility decision-makers.
  • Serve as a technical point of contact for assigned clients and salespersons, answering questions and keeping projects on schedule.
  • Provide technical content and support for Sales proposals and client presentations.

· Inflow & Infiltration (I&I) Studies:

  • Plan flow monitoring studies, including use of GIS and system maps to select monitoring locations.
  • Analyze flow, level, and rainfall data to separate dry- and wet-weather flow, establish diurnal baselines, and quantify rainfall-derived inflow and infiltration (RDII).
  • Identify and prioritize areas of the collection system for follow-up investigation and present results to clients.

· Odor & Hydrogen Sulfide (H₂S) Studies:

  • Plan odor studies, including H₂S data logger placement, in response to client odor complaints and corrosion concerns.
  • Analyze H₂S logger data to characterize baseline conditions, daily and seasonal patterns, and treatment performance.
  • Use study findings to recommend treatment and dosing approaches and report results against client goals.

· Fats, Oils & Grease (FOG):

  • Assess FOG conditions across collection systems using GIS data such as pipe and manhole layers, client cleaning records, and food service establishment locations.
  • Support development of field evaluation and microbial dosing plans to reduce the FOG build-up tailored to each system and client’s goals.

· GIS & Spatial Data Analysis:

  • Receive, clean, and validate client GIS data (e.g., shapefiles, geodatabases) of varying quality and completeness.
  • Perform spatial analysis to support study design, dosing plans, and reporting.
  • Produce clear, client-ready maps and figures.

· Data Analysis & Reporting:

  • Analyze operational data from flow meters, H₂S loggers, sensors, and field observations.
  • Write technical reports, performance summaries, and client dashboard updates with clear recommendations.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and help improve In-Pipe Technology’s standardized analysis tools and workflows.

· Field Work & Internal Collaboration:

  • Coordinate with Field Operations on equipment deployment, site access, and data collection.
  • Work with Sales, Field Operations, and other departments to align on client commitments, timelines, and next steps.
  • Communicate project status, risks, and needs clearly across teams.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering, civil engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Hands-on experience with GIS software (ArcGIS Pro preferred) for spatial analysis, data management, and map production, gained through work, internships, or academic projects.
  • Strong verbal communication skills, including comfort leading client meetings, asking probing questions to understand client needs, and explaining technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Strong technical writing and presentation skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize, and follow through with both clients and internal teams.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and excellent attention to detail and accuracy.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with wastewater collection systems, including flow monitoring, I&I/RDII analysis, odor and H₂S control, or FOG programs.
  • Client-facing experience in consulting, a utility, or technical sales support, including scoping projects or presenting to clients.
  • Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certification; Professional Engineer (PE) license for experienced candidates.
  • Familiarity with Python or similar scripting languages for data processing. Especially interested in those with experience using AI or machine learning tools for data analysis and process optimization.
