Jobs at Karya

There are plenty of skills among people even in the remotest rural communities in India. Despite the significant advances in technology, these skills remain hidden. Providing pathways for people to express these skills can result in a positive cycle. Skills enable new job opportunities, which in turn improve income levels, which in turn enables opportunities to acquire new skills. Project Karya started as a research project at Microsoft Research India and is now an early-stage startup, Karya Inc. The mission for Karya Inc is to enable work opportunities for people, particularly in remote rural communities, using their existing skill sets. While there are plenty of challenges to solve from awareness to access to language to payments, our research shows that these barriers are surmountable with proper design and outreach. We are currently focused on making language-based digital work accessible to people in rural communities. Our users obtain high levels of accuracy for various types of digital tasks. Using our platform, we have already collected some of the largest language datasets, particularly in low-resource Indian languages. At Karya Inc, we are not just looking for developers who can build platforms that can bridge the gaps in access, but also innovators who can create innovative ideas to market the skills of people in rural communities. Together, we hope to empower people in rural communities with more equitable opportunities, and better access to technology and information.
