Stroke is the leading cause of disability in the United States, but fast diagnosis and treatment has a significant impact in preventing long-term disabilities. There is no objective and comprehensive stroke screening tool available today. The current gold standard is a set of clinical exams called a stroke scale. Unfortunately it requires practice and training, is inconsistent across practitioners, and provides little feedback on effectiveness outside of a hospital setting. Even in the emergency room, doctors prefer the objectiveness of a CT scan or MRI to supplement a negative stroke scale result on patients with common symptoms like dizziness or headaches. In order for a patient to get comprehensive stroke care they must be taken to an appropriate stroke hospital, as not all hospitals provide comprehensive care. Only 1 in 7 hospitals is a designated stroke center, and even less, 1 in 70, are comprehensive stroke centers which can treat all strokes all the time. Due to poor pre-hospital screening, which relies primarily on observed symptoms, 50% of stroke patients go to the wrong level of care. Their are over $20 Billion in annual savings for the US healthcare system for triaging patients directly, in short, long term, and logistics costs.
