The new players into these segments range from those who are leveraging the growing wave of ecommerce in India to those established organisations who are entering retail segments with large chains of super and hypermarkets. This has resulted in the local merchants and vendors losing a portion of the market share as the new customer behaviours and segmentations are being defined. Besides disrupting local merchants, the crowding of the essentials’ market players has led to a situation wherein the customers do not have transparency around the pricing of their essential products. The mix of these new players with different promises to the customers has led to a situation wherein the customers are bombarded with different offers/discounts and different pricing for the same items they usually buy. This, when looked from the entire shopping basket perspective leads the customer to question if they are really getting the best prices. In addition to the opacity of the pricing, the lure of many new large super and hypermarkets is also promoting irresponsible consumer behaviour wherein customers end up buying things they would not need, which accelerates the resource depletion of the planet and hence impacting the environment negatively.
