Beginning with puberty, women are encouraged by doctors to perform breast self exams (BSEs) as a way to mitigate the risk of breast cancer with early detection. Most often they are told to familiarize themselves with the landscape of their breast tissue and then perform BSEs monthly throughout their lives, allowing them to detect abnormal growths in their early stages. In theory this seems straightforward, but breast tissue varies from person to person, and often can present with bumps and lumps that are completely normal. Consequently, it's nearly impossible for the average woman to discern the difference between a cancerous tumor and non-problematic growth like a benign cyst or even just dense tissue. Most existing curriculum on BSEs is either exclusively written or verbal, and provides no tactile representation of what women should look for. This lack of clarity results in high anxiety which can deter women from performing BSEs altogether. Early detection makes an enormous difference in breast cancer survival rates. Those who receive breast cancer diagnoses between stages 0-2 have roughly a 100% 5 year survival rate, but the rate lowers to 22% when breast cancer is diagnosed at stage 4. For this reason early detection practices are vital, and resources need to be made available to women that allow them to perform BSEs with as much accuracy and confidence as possible.
