Overview

GovStar seeks a Database Management Administrator to support the reliability, performance, security, and effective use of data across mission-critical systems. This role will administer and optimize databases and data platforms, help establish practical data governance standards, and prepare trusted data for reporting and analysis.

The ideal candidate combines hands-on experience with PostgreSQL and modern data platforms such as Databricks with a strong foundation in database operations, data quality, privacy, and data integration. The role will work with technical teams and business stakeholders to ensure that data is well-managed and that reporting processes follow established procedures.

IMPORTANT: Mission-Critical Work Schedule ###

This role supports a year-round national security reporting function, helping ensure timely, accurate reporting to senior government leaders. The position requires a non-standard schedule during Eastern Time hours, including early mornings, with weekend and federal-holiday coverage on a rotational basis to maintain continuity of reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Administer and monitor PostgreSQL databases and related data platforms, including Databricks and Qlik, to support availability, performance, and reliable access to data.
  • Diagnose and resolve database issues; optimize queries, indexes, schemas, and workloads to improve performance and efficient use of resources.
  • Develop, maintain, and test backup, restoration, and disaster recovery procedures in coordination with established recovery objectives.
  • Build, operate, and improve ETL/ELT pipelines that move, transform, validate, and load data across source systems and reporting environments.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate, consistent, well-documented datasets for reporting and analysis, including reusable data definitions and validation checks.
  • Help establish and maintain data management and governance practices, including standards for data quality, ownership, documentation, access, and appropriate handling of sensitive data.
  • Apply approved standards for immigration reporting and work with relevant stakeholders to clarify data definitions, validation rules, and reporting requirements.
  • Monitor data processes for failures, quality issues, and inconsistencies; investigate root causes and coordinate remediation with system owners and data users.
  • Maintain database and data-pipeline documentation, including configurations, data flows, operational procedures, and known dependencies.
  • Collaborate with data engineers, analysts, security and privacy stakeholders, and business teams to align database and data-management work with operational and reporting needs.

    Relevant Technologies

  • Database Management: SQL, PostgreSQL, Snowflake

  • Data Platforms: Databricks

  • Data Integration: ETL pipelines and workflow orchestrations

  • Data Visualization: Qlik, Tableau

  • Containerization: Docker

  • Version Control: Git, GitHub, GitLab

  • Project Management Tools: Jira

  • Diagramming Tools: Microsoft Visio

    Minimum Requirements ###

  • U.S. citizenship.

  • Must live in the United States in either the Eastern or Central time zone.

  • Must be able to obtain a DHS Public Trust clearance.

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Data Science, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, or a related field.

  • The ability to reliably manage (without fail) a non-standard schedule, including early mornings, weekends, and periodic holiday work.

  • 5+ years of professional Data Engineering/Data Science experience.

  • Hands-on experience administering and optimizing PostgreSQL databases.

  • Strong SQL skills, including the ability to investigate data issues and develop or improve queries.

  • Strong experience supporting data pipelines and preparing data for reporting or analytics.

  • Experience with database backup, restoration, access management, and disaster recovery practices.

  • Experience applying data-quality checks and documenting data processes or standards.

  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with technical and nontechnical stakeholders.

  • Strong desire to support our country by working on mission-critical systems.

    Preferred Requirements

  • 7+ years of professional experience

  • Experience with Snowflake and Databricks.

  • Experience with Databricks and Qlik.

  • Experience supporting reporting in a regulated, government, or otherwise sensitive-data environment.
