About the job

About This Week in AI

This Week in AI is an AI media company covering the products, companies and ideas shaping the AI economy. We primarily target CxOs, Founders, Operators and in general people who want to build in AI.
We started with a newsletter and have built a growing audience of builders, founders and operators interested in understanding what is actually happening in AI — beyond the daily news cycle.
We're now expanding aggressively into YouTube and other media formats.
We're looking for someone who wants to help build that media company with us.
Someone who wants to build the machine.

The Role

We're looking for a Content, Media Operator who can take an idea from:
Research → Insight → Story → Content → Distribution → Growth → Learning
You'll work directly with the founder and have significant ownership over the content and growth engine.
One day you might be researching an emerging AI company. The next, writing a newsletter section, developing a YouTube script, figuring out a better thumbnail, analyzing why a video didn't work, or experimenting with a completely new distribution channel.
You won't have a predefined playbook.
Part of your job is to create the playbook.

What You'll Do

1. Build the editorial engine
Research and create content across our media properties. You'll:

  • Track AI companies, products, research, markets and emerging trends.
  • Read deeply across news, research papers, company announcements, technical documentation, earnings reports and online discourse.
  • Find interesting stories and, more importantly, identify why they matter.
  • Write newsletter content, social posts, scripts and other editorial formats.
  • Turn complex ideas in AI, business and technology into content that is accessible and interesting.
  • Develop recurring content formats and editorial franchises.
  • Maintain a pipeline of ideas rather than waiting for the next assignment.

2. Own YouTube end-to-end
We're building YouTube as a major part of This Week in AI.

You'll help own the entire process: Idea → Research → Angle → Script → Production → Title → Thumbnail → Publishing → Analytics → Iteration

You'll work with editors and other collaborators where necessary, but you'll own the outcome.
You'll constantly ask:

  • What should we make?
  • Why would someone click?
  • Why would they watch?
  • Why would they share it?
  • What did we learn from the last video?
  • What should we do differently next time?

3. Build our audience
Content without distribution isn't a media business.
You'll experiment across YouTube, X, LinkedIn, Substack, Instagram, TikTok and whatever else makes sense. You'll:

  • Develop distribution strategies.
  • Experiment with formats, hooks, packaging and publishing.
  • Understand platform-specific mechanics.
  • Analyze audience and content performance.
  • Identify what's working and double down.
  • Kill things that aren't working.
  • Find unconventional ways to get distribution. We're looking for someone who sees growth as a creative problem, not just a dashboard of metrics.

4. Think about the business
This isn't a pure editorial role.
We want someone who understands that media is ultimately a business.
You should be curious about:

  • Startups
  • Business models
  • Markets
  • Economics
  • Distribution
  • Consumer behavior
  • Technology
  • The AI ecosystem You should be able to look at a company, product or trend and ask: "What's the business here?" And when you see an interesting development in AI, you should naturally wonder: "Why does this matter?"

Who We're Looking For

The simplest description: You're a creator who has become an operator.
You've probably spent the early part of your career making things, building audiences, experimenting with the internet and figuring things out yourself.
You don't need to have worked at a major media company.
In fact, we're more interested in what you've built yourself.

Some preferences:

  • ~3 years of professional experience, give or take.
  • Experience creating content in some form.
  • A track record of growing at least one social media channel, community, publication or audience.
  • Demonstrated audience growth — the absolute starting or ending number matters less than what you actually achieved.
  • Strong writing ability.
  • Strong research ability.
  • An instinct for interesting ideas and stories.
  • A genuine interest in AI, technology, startups and business.
  • Comfort learning new tools and platforms.
  • The ability to work independently with very little hand-holding.

Most importantly:
You are curious.

You read things because you want to understand them. You go down rabbit holes. You learn things nobody asked you to learn. You try tools because you want to see how they work. You notice interesting patterns. And when you don't know how to do something, your first instinct is: "Let me figure it out."

The Most Important Trait: High Agency

We don't want a path follower.
We want a path shower.
You should be comfortable starting with: "I don't know how we're going to do this."
…and ending with: "I figured something out. Here's what we should try."
You'll have a lot of freedom in this role.
That also means you'll have a lot of responsibility.
We won't give you a detailed checklist every Monday morning.
We'll give you a goal and expect you to figure out how to get there.

You Need to Have Built Something

This is a non-negotiable.
You should be able to point to something you've grown.
It could be:

  • A YouTube channel
  • An X account
  • A LinkedIn page
  • An Instagram account
  • A newsletter
  • A community
  • A niche publication
  • A personal brand
  • Or something else entirely

We don't care whether it has 10K, 50K or 500K followers. We care that you started somewhere and made it grow.

Tell us what you started with, what you did, what happened, and what you learned.

What This Role Is NOT

This probably isn't the right role for you if you're looking for:

  • A conventional 9–5 content job.
  • A role where someone hands you topics and tells you exactly what to write.
  • A social media job where success means publishing X posts per week.
  • A job where you only operate within your existing skill set.
  • A role with a clearly defined playbook.
  • A large team where your individual contribution is difficult to see.

And we aren't particularly interested in:

  • Where you went to college.
  • How many followers your friends have.
  • Whether you have connections at large technology companies.
  • Whether you can name-drop people in the industry.

Show us what you've actually built.

What Success Looks Like

2 months in, we'd want you to be someone who can independently say:
"Here's what's happening in AI."
"Here's the story we should tell."
"Here's how we should tell it."
"Here's how we're going to distribute it."
"Here's what the numbers say."
"Here's what I learned."
"And here's what I think we should do next."
That's the person we're looking for.

Why Join?

You'll work directly with the founder and have a front-row seat to building an AI-focused media company from an early stage.

You'll get to work across: AI × Media × Content × YouTube × Startups
You'll have significant ownership, the ability to experiment, and the opportunity to build things that can become core parts of the company.

If you're someone who has always wanted to build something of your own but also wants the stability and resources of a growing company, this might be a particularly good fit.
