EFS Group is hiring a Catch-Up Accountant to lead one of our highest-demand services: bringing client books up to date, accurate, and ready to move forward. This is a dedicated, specialized role for someone who enjoys solving the puzzle of incomplete, inconsistent, or inaccurate historical records, not simply maintaining books that are already clean. You'll own each catch-up engagement from intake through delivery, working directly with clients to resolve open items and ensure the financials are accurate, complete, and reliable for both the client and our team. As you grow into the role, you'll also take on responsibility of new client onboarding, helping ensure a smooth transition from signed proposal through the start of ongoing accounting services.

Responsibilities

• Own catch-up bookkeeping engagements from kickoff through delivery, rebuilding books for clients whose records are incomplete, inaccurate, or behind.
• Manage bank and merchant data imports for each catch-up period, ensuring completeness before reconciliation begins.
• Reconcile bank and credit card accounts across the full catch-up period, tracking down and resolving every discrepancy between books and statements.
• Review existing bookkeeping, client-maintained or from a previous provider, to catch miscategorizations, duplicate entries, and missing transactions before rebuilding the ledger.
• Apply cash and accrual accounting methods as each engagement requires, following IFRS/GAAP standards throughout.
• Meet regularly with clients to resolve open items and keep engagements moving on schedule. Scope and estimate catch-up projects accurately, flagging complexity early to protect timelines and budgets.
• Reconcile historical payroll allocations and sales tax liabilities against filings already made, identifying and documenting any gaps.
• Document the reasoning behind historical entries clearly, and keep engagement documentation organized in the Teamwork portal.
• Liaise with the tax department after catch-up completion to confirm the books are ready and viable for filing with federal entities where necessary.
• Deliver every engagement within EFS's budgeted timeframe, communicating any potential adjustment to the completion timeline to the client and EFS team as early as possible.
• Own closing calls to wrap up each completed engagement with the client.

As you grow into the role, take ownership of new client onboarding, managing the process end to end.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field, or a minimum of two years of professional-level work experience in accounting.
• Proven experience with catch-up or cleanup bookkeeping engagements, not just steady-state monthly maintenance.
• Comfortable working in both cash and accrual accounting, with a solid grasp of IFRS/GAAP standards.
• Strong judgment working through incomplete, disorganized, or conflicting historical records.
• Proficiency in payroll allocations and reconciliations using various payroll software integrations.
• Sharp attention to detail, with the discipline to fully reconcile every period rather than approximate a close.
• Familiarity with a variety of cloud bookkeeping technologies and tools.
• Strong project management skills, with the ability to scope, sequence, and drive a multi-period catch-up to completion on deadline.
• Confident communicator, comfortable leading client meetings and requesting documentation directly.
• Able to manage multiple concurrent catch-up projects independently in a fast-paced environment.
