About the job

About 1HMX

1HMX family of brands, including Advanced Input Systems (AIS), is a global leader in Human Machine eXperience (HMX) solutions, delivering innovative, high-performance products that power the future of human interaction with technology. Our portfolio includes electro-mechanical assemblies, virtual reality components, infection control interfaces, and industrial and medical display systems. With a focus on quality, precision, and customer satisfaction, we support a wide range of industries from our state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities across Coeur d'Alene (Idaho), Taiwan, and Shenzhen, China.

Role Summary

1HMX / AIS is looking for a Principal Mechanical Engineer to serve as the senior-most technical authority on mechanical and electromechanical design across our most complex and strategically important programs. This individual will set technical direction, resolve the hardest design and manufacturing problems, and mentor other engineers, while still driving designs end to end from ideation through qualification and into production. Projects will range from internal innovations to flagship products with world leading brands. Technology includes plastic injection molding, elastomeric molding, machining, metal forming and stamping. This is a role for an experienced engineer who thrives on ambiguity and hard problems, influences technical strategy beyond a single project, works closely with customers and factory teams at the executive and technical level, and takes ownership of outcomes across the broader engineering organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leads architectural and detailed mechanical/electromechanical design on the most complex programs, utilizing 1HMX technology to exceed customer requirements and specifications.
  • Assists in performing costing activities to support sales growth.
  • Works with customers to help establish design definitions.
  • Sets technical direction and roadmap for mechanical design capabilities, driving innovation that builds long-term 1HMX value.
  • Owns the development and maintenance of design standards and best practices across the mechanical engineering organization.
  • Coordinates mechanical/electromechanical design activities with the responsible Project Manager.
  • Reviews designs with Manufacturing to ensure the product is manufacturable.
  • Responsible for the mechanical/electromechanical facets of assigned projects through production.
  • Lead reliability and testing of designs.
  • Mentors and provides technical guidance to other mechanical engineers, raising the design and problem-solving capability of the team.
  • Provides technical leadership across multiple concurrent programs, stepping in to resolve the most difficult design and manufacturability issues.
  • Represents 1HMX / AIS in senior technical discussions with strategic customers and partners.
  • Participate in technical design review meetings.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • 12 plus years of relevant product design experience, including demonstrated technical leadership on complex programs.
  • Deep, proven experience designing and analyzing complex multi-part mechanisms and mechanical/electromechanical assemblies, from concept through production.
  • Strong analytical abilities in math, stress, and thermal analysis.
  • Attention to detail, tolerancing, accuracy, and speed of execution.
  • Experience with plastic, elastomer, and metal part design and fabrication.
  • Solid foundation in materials science.
  • Familiarity with designing for EMC compliance.
  • Rapid prototyping experience.
  • Electronic packaging experience.
  • 3D CAD tool experience, preferably with SolidWorks.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with customers, vendors, and factory personnel.
  • Ability to manage individual design projects from conception through production.
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects.
  • Demonstrated track record mentoring engineers and influencing technical direction beyond a single project team.
  • Advanced CAD/CAE experience, e.g., advanced surfacing and FEA.

Preferred

  • Experience with industry-standard PC interfaces.
  • Experience holding or contributing to patents, or publishing/presenting technical work externally.
  • Experience with statistical quality control and inspection techniques.
  • Familiarity with FDA, TUV, EC, FCC, and other applicable agency requirements.
  • Familiarity with reliability engineering methodologies, including worst-case, stress, and durability analysis and HALT.
  • Experience establishing sourcing and tooling strategies.
  • Experience with direct customer technical communication and guidance.

Work Conditions

  • Some domestic and occasional global travel to support customers and 1HMX / AIS facilities.
  • Ability to work in lab, prototype shop, and manufacturing environments with appropriate PPE.

Equal Opportunity

1HMX /AIS is an equal opportunity employer. We are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees and do not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or any other protected characteristic.
