Position Summary

The Co-Packaged Optics, Director provides deep technical expertise in silicon photonics and photonic integrated circuits (PICs) to identify and develop differentiated semiconductor innovations. The role explores emerging photonic technologies, develops innovative architectures and components, and translates technical discoveries into valuable intellectual property. Working closely with the VP, Emerging Technology & Discovery, this role advances Adeia’s innovation efforts in co-packaged optics, optical interconnects, and next-generation photonic technologies through technical leadership, and invention and IP generation. The role serves as the company’s recognized technical authority in optics and photonics space, influencing engineering priorities, technology strategy, industry collaboration and future innovation platforms.

Key Responsibilities

Technology Strategy & Innovation

Own the Co-Packaged Optics Technology Roadmap. Define the long-term strategy, architecture roadmap, and innovation priorities for co-packaged optics and silicon photonics aligned with Adeia’s semiconductor strategy.
Drive Component and Architecture Innovation. Develop differentiated photonic architectures, optical components, and technologies that expand Adeia’s technology portfolio and future IP licensing opportunities.

Architecture Leadership & Technology Development

Lead Architecture Development. Drive architectural exploration across photonic integrated circuits (PICs), silicon photonics, packaging, optical interconnects, and system integration to identify breakthrough technology opportunities.
Advance Emerging Technologies. Lead modeling, simulation, prototyping, and technical validation to mature innovative photonic concepts into scalable technology platforms.

Innovation & External Engagement

Lead Innovation and IP Strategy. Direct invention activities and partner with IP Engineering to build foundational patent portfolios supporting future licensing opportunities.
Drive Strategic Technology Programs. Evaluate emerging photonics technologies and lead technology initiatives that strengthen Adeia’s innovation portfolio.
Develop Strategic Industry Partnerships. Build technical relationships with semiconductor companies, customers, foundries, universities, and ecosystem partners to accelerate technology development and validation.
Represent Adeia Externally. Serve as Adeia’s technical authority in customer engagements, industry forums, and strategic technical collaborations.

Enterprise Technology Leadership

Drive Enterprise Technical Leadership. Influence technology strategy and engineering priorities across Discovery Engineering, R&D, IP Engineering, and Product Engineering while mentoring senior technical contributors.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Photonics, Optics, Physics, or a related field
15+ years of experience in photonics, photonic integrated circuit (PIC) design, or optical communication technologies.
Hands-on experience across PIC design, layout, testing, packaging, integration, and photonic product development.
Experience with optical simulation, modeling, and photonic design flows.
Hands-on experience with optical design, simulation, and modeling tools such as CODE V, Zemax, LightTools, MATLAB, Python, or equivalent photonics design environments.
Experience designing photonic components such as waveguides, modulators, couplers, reflectors, optical I/O systems, or multi-wavelength optical systems.
Experience generating inventions, patents, or innovative technology concepts in photonics or optical technologies.
Experience collaborating with cross-functional engineering teams to evaluate technologies and develop new photonics concepts.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with co-packaged optics and optical interconnect architectures.
Experience with AI compute photonics, hyperscale optical systems, or advanced optical networking technologies.
Experience with photonic PDK development or layout automation.
Experience collaborating with semiconductor companies, research institutions, customers, or technology partners on photonics development.

Location: Remote US

National Range: $202,000 - $250,000

Bonus Target: 20% of annualized base pay

Restricted Stock Units Target (as a % of annualized base pay): 75%

The base compensation is based on the primary work location, as ranges are location-specific. Actual compensation will depend on factors such as skills, experience, and qualifications.
