About the job

Team Description:

The Supply Chain team owns the internal and external manufacturing and supplier network behind every component of the Implant and the Robot. Dimensional Quality sits inside that team as Neuralink's measurement authority: we inspect purchased parts at incoming, verify first articles from suppliers and the machine shop, and own the CMM fleet that makes those calls defensible. We partner daily with Design, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, and Sourcing so fit, form, and function issues get caught at the source, and so our inspection systems scale with the clinical and commercial roadmap.

Job Description and Responsibilities:

We are hiring a Metrologist / Senior CMM Operator to be the dimensional measurement authority at Neuralink. You will own programming, fixturing, and reporting on our CMM fleet, stand up a real Incoming Quality Control (IQC) workflow for purchased parts, provide first-article and in-process inspection for in-house machined parts, and train and certify additional operators across the company so this capability scales with our roadmap. This is a hands-on role with broad scope and direct exposure to design, manufacturing, and supplier-quality engineers.

  • Own CMM programming, fixturing, calibration, and measurement uncertainty for Neuralink's bridge CMM, optical CMM, and portable arm fleet (Zeiss / Hexagon / Romer / FaroArm class equipment).
  • Build the IQC workflow for purchased parts: Sample plans, AS9102 / first-article review, independent CMM verification of critical features, and a clean NCR loop back to suppliers.
  • Perform first-article and in-process inspection on in-house machined parts — flexures, housings, Titanium / PEEK components, and other small, complex, tight-tolerance geometry.
  • Apply ASME Y14.5 GD&T rigorously: Build defensible datum schemes, choose appropriate alignments, and run contact and scanning routines that produce reproducible results.
  • Generate clean, reviewable inspection reports (PC-DMIS, Calypso, PolyWorks, or equivalent) that feed directly into design reviews and supplier scorecards.
  • Author and own the CMM operator training curriculum; certify additional operators across machinists, technicians, and interested engineers so we are never single-threaded on one person.
  • Partner with Design, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, and Supplier Quality on tolerance stack-ups, datum strategy, fixture design, and capability studies before parts release to fab.
  • Maintain calibration, traceability, and gage R&R for measurement equipment; help mature our quality system toward audit-ready (ISO 13485 / FDA QSR) standards.
  • Visit suppliers as needed to debug fit / form / function issues at the source and accelerate corrective actions.

Required Qualifications:

  • 3+ years (mid) or 7+ years (senior) of hands-on CMM experience on bridge CMMs and portable arms in a production or precision-manufacturing environment.
  • Strong CMM programming skills in at least one of: PC-DMIS, Calypso, PolyWorks, Verisurf, or comparable — including alignments, iterative datum schemes, and scanning routines.
  • Deep, working knowledge of ASME Y14.5 GD&T applied to small, complex, tight-tolerance parts (sub-thousandth-of-an-inch features are common at Neuralink).
  • Experience reviewing AS9102 / PPAP-style first-article documentation and writing clear, actionable NCRs that drive supplier corrective action.
  • Fixturing instinct — you know when to design a fixture vs. iterate alignments, and you can specify or build simple fixtures yourself.
  • Clear written and verbal communication; comfortable presenting inspection results to engineers and engineering leadership.
  • High ownership and bias to action; comfortable being the single accountable person for measurement integrity on a program.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Background in aerospace, defense, medical device, semiconductor, or precision robotics — environments that share Neuralink's verticality and tolerance regime.
  • Hands-on experience with CT / X-ray inspection, optical CMM, structured-light scanning, or laser trackers for parts that resist contact metrology.
  • Demonstrated history of training other operators, writing SOPs / work instructions, and building certification programs.
  • Familiarity with ISO 17025 lab practices, ISO 13485, FDA 21 CFR 820, or comparable regulated-environment quality systems.
  • Programming and scripting fluency (Python, basic VBA / macros, or DMIS scripting) for automating reports and integrating with internal data systems.

Additional Requirements and Competencies:

  • Willingness to travel up to 10–25% between our Austin, TX and South San Francisco, CA sites.
