About the job
Principal Engineer, AI-Native Engineering
Salary Range: $190,000 - $210,000
About the role
Mend™ is a life sciences and biotechnology company that harnesses the power of nature to supercharge health and healing, enhancing care delivery and improving patient outcomes through advanced technology and data-driven solutions.
We're looking for a Principal Engineer to join our engineering team as a senior technical leader, working closely with our CTO and team on how we build — and how AI reshapes that process. This is a hands-on IC role: you'll design systems, write code, and help set the technical bar, including the practices and guardrails that let AI coding agents (like Claude Code) take on a growing share of code generation, testing, and PR review without compromising quality, security, or compliance. You'll also mentor engineers day to day and partner on architecture decisions. We're looking for someone who pairs deep technical skill with genuine collaboration, and ideally has built patient-facing and/or care-team-facing products before.
You will
- Lead architecture and system design decisions across our core platform, in tight collaboration with our team
- Define and drive our AI-native engineering practices - how the team uses AI coding agents for code generation, test writing, and PR review, and the evaluation frameworks and guardrails (LLM-as-judge, review gates, security checks) that keep AI-assisted output safe and reliable
- Set technical direction for a React/React Native frontend and Node.js/TypeScript and Python/FastAPI backend stack
- Design and review systems for scalability, security, and maintainability within our AWS infrastructure
- Build and ship patient-facing and/or care-team-facing product features, balancing technical depth with strong product and clinical-workflow sensibility
- Lead by example on code quality - write and ship production code regularly, leveraging AI tooling
- Support our data security posture, ensuring engineering practices and system design meet HIPAA, SOC 2, and related compliance requirements as we scale
- Own our approach to healthcare data interoperability, including FHIR-based integrations with EHRs and partner systems
- Mentor and level up engineers through code review, pairing, and hands-on technical guidance, and be a collaborative, approachable technical partner across the team. You are a multiplier.
- Partner with the CTOand tech leadership on technical hiring and onboarding as the team grows
What excites us about you
Passionate about technology and curious about how AI is changing software engineering. Experience in healthcare. Driven by the impact you create for patients, teammates, and the business. Simple is good. A great problem solver who's extremely communicative, an efficient listener, and thinks like an entrepreneur.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, with demonstrated architecture and technical leadership
- Hands-on experience with React and/or React Native, Node.js/TypeScript and/or Python/FastAPI
- Hands-on experience building production level AI-assisted engineering workflows for code generation, automated testing, PR review and the technical judgment to know where to trust AI output and where to add guardrails
- Experience building patient-facing and care-team-facing applications, including a mobile app
- Experience with end to end planning and development of full stack platforms, including data, infrastructure, CI/CD
- Deep AWS experience
- Experience with healthcare interoperability standards, specifically FHIR
- Experience operating in a regulated environment (HIPAA, SOC 2, or similar)
- Comfort operating with ambiguity and limited process
