About the job

We're looking for an engineer who wants to take ownership of complex client projects and help solve some of the most challenging problems in surgery, medical devices, and therapeutic delivery.

COSA is a Cambridge-based anatomical engineering company that helps pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device companies de-risk surgical procedures, therapeutic delivery systems, and medical technologies throughout development and clinical adoption.

We develop advanced anatomical models, surgical simulation platforms, and validation systems that enable our clients to better understand complex anatomy, evaluate new devices and therapies, train clinicians, and reduce technical and clinical risk before reaching patients.

Our work sits at the intersection of engineering, medicine, and translational research. By combining advanced medical imaging, computational modelling, additive manufacturing, materials engineering, and clinical expertise, we help tackle some of the most challenging problems in surgery and therapeutic delivery.

Who We're Looking For

We're looking for a proactive and adaptable engineer who enjoys solving difficult problems and taking ownership of their work.

The ideal candidate will have a background in Biomedical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering, although we're open to applicants from other technical disciplines who can demonstrate a strong aptitude for problem solving and learning new skills.

Experience in all of our technical domains is not expected. We care more about curiosity, initiative, critical thinking, quality of work, and the ability to learn quickly than deep expertise in a single area.

You will thrive if you enjoy working directly with clients, taking responsibility for delivering projects end-to-end, and finding creative solutions where no obvious answer exists.

What You'll Be Doing: Client & Project Delivery

  • Work with clients to understand requirements, challenges, and desired outcomes
  • Refine project scope and translate client needs into practical technical solutions
  • Create project plans and help manage project delivery
  • Prepare client updates, technical reports, and project documentation
  • Present work and results to clients and collaborators

Engineering & Development

  • Design anatomical models, test rigs, fixtures, and experimental systems using CAD
  • Develop advanced surgical simulation and validation platforms
  • Support development of novel tools and technologies for surgical training and device validation
  • Integrate sensors and instrumentation into testing systems
  • Support development of custom measurement and data acquisition systems

Medical Imaging & Data Analysis

  • Process and analyse medical imaging data (CT, MRI, etc.)
  • Perform image segmentation and anatomical reconstruction workflows
  • Conduct quantitative data analysis and interpret experimental results
  • Develop Python scripts and workflows for automation and analysis

Validation & Research

  • Work with surgeons, clinicians, and scientific advisors to test and validate solutions
  • Design and execute experiments
  • Contribute to research projects and internal innovation activities
  • Support development of new capabilities within the company

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Degree in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical discipline
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Experience with 3D CAD software
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of tasks
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience analysing technical data and drawing evidence-based conclusions
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects
  • Willingness to learn new skills and work across disciplines

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • Medical image processing and segmentation
  • Anatomical modelling
  • Python programming
  • Sensor integration and instrumentation
  • Force sensors and data acquisition systems
  • Electronics or embedded hardware development
  • Experimental design and validation
  • Statistical analysis
  • Additive manufacturing / 3D printing
  • Medical devices or regulated product development
  • Finite element analysis or computational modelling
  • Consultancy or client-facing project experience

Why Join COSA?
Joining COSA means becoming part of a small, ambitious team where your work will directly influence both client outcomes and the future direction of the company.

Unlike larger consultancies, you'll work closely with the founders, interact directly with clients, clinicians, and industry partners, and quickly gain ownership of meaningful projects spanning engineering, research, and product development. We believe talented people grow fastest when given responsibility, support, and the freedom to solve problems their own way. We're a close-knit team that values openness, honesty, and continuous improvement. We support each other, share ideas freely, and aren't afraid to challenge each other when it helps us deliver better outcomes for our clients.
