About the job
Join Sniffspot to build the future of dog parks — a global platform giving dogs safe freedom and their humans peace of mind.
About Us
Sniffspot is the Airbnb for dog parks! We enable anyone to rent land by the hour as a safe and private dog park.
Dogs evolved in a world where they could run free — but modern life rarely gives them that freedom. As a result, dogs today face challenges like obesity, reactivity, and anxiety. Sniffspot exists to change that by reconnecting dogs with their natural instincts, helping them live happier and healthier lives.
We're a marketplace where guests (dog parents) rent spots (land) from hosts (landowners) by the hour.
What It's Like to Work at Sniffspot
Sniffspot is an early-stage, US-based startup with a small, global, fully remote team. You'll be joining a close-knit group that's building the foundation of the company. You'll have major impact on both our product direction and engineering culture.
We operate primarily asynchronously, giving you control over your focus time. You'll join a daily stand-up and maintain working overlap with US Eastern hours, collaborating with teammates across multiple time zones. When issues arise post-release, we trust our team to jump in and collaborate in real time to resolve them quickly.
We value architectural humility, encouraging open design discussions and peer reviews to validate and strengthen our systems. Our engineers are driven by a continuous improvement mindset — always exploring new tools and practices that improve performance, cost, and operability. We communicate trade-offs transparently, ensuring decisions are well understood and open to feedback.
We're customer-obsessed, design-oriented, and driven by feedback. Everything we build starts from understanding what makes dog owners' and hosts' experiences better.
Sniffspot is proud to be a diverse, inclusive company that values curiosity, empathy, and collaboration in everything we do.
You Will
- Assess shortcomings in our current billing, credit, and scheduling architecture and offer experience-informed opinions to improve them over time as we scale and add new verticals.
- Design and build a robust subscription management system that lets product and business teams run A/B tests and experiments without engineering involvement.
- Develop and improve backend services, data pipelines, and the infrastructure and build systems that support them.
- Drive user stories independently from ideation to completion — scoping projects, clarifying requirements with product, measuring success, and iterating on user feedback.
- Facilitate team discussions, resolve technical challenges, and help mature our engineering practices, quality, and tooling over the next several years.
- Bridge communication across time zones with product and product support, and help onboard and mentor future team members as we grow.
- Ensure smooth rollouts and monitor feature impact post-launch.
We're Looking for Someone Who Has
- 7+ years, or equivalent, of software development experience across backend and frontend, operating at a staff/senior level.
- Familiarity with Ruby on Rails, ReactJS, and relational databases (Postgres).
- Familiarity with working with and building distributed systems, observability, and test automation
- Familiarity with engineering practices such as CI, CD, unit testing, test automation, TDD, etc.
- Familiarity with billing, subscriptions, payments, or scheduling systems — and clear thinking about the trade-offs of evolving them safely.
- Experience with infrastructure and pipeline development, and with cloud deployment: GitLab CI, Docker, Heroku, AWS (RDS Postgres, S3, Lambda, ECS, CloudFront).
- Familiarity with mobile applications (React Native) and how backend decisions affect mobile clients.
- Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal — this role bridges engineering, product, and product support across time zones.
- Leadership skills — facilitation, mentoring, strategic thinking; you get satisfaction from individual contribution.
- A scrappy, pragmatic startup mindset, paired with a view of how technology, practices, and teams mature over a 5-year horizon.
- Availability to work mostly asynchronously with at least 4 hours of overlap with US Eastern hours, daily stand-up attendance, and occasional schedule adjustments to do what it takes to sync with stakeholders or handle infrequent incidents.
- Comfort collaborating directly with founders, product leads, and other stakeholders.
- Pride in shepherding projects from ideation to completion, including partnering with operations to roll out changes that affect their workflows.
- Value in feedback and open collaboration — you're as comfortable reviewing others' work as you are having yours reviewed.
- You've seen what strong engineering looks like at scale and know how to apply those lessons pragmatically in a fast-moving startup.
Why Join Us
- You'll shape the foundation of a growing product and company.
- You'll take meaningful ownership over both the technical direction and user experience, while collaborating with talented peers.
- You'll work in a small, high-impact team where your voice matters.
- You'll build features that directly improve the lives of dogs and their humans around the world.
Application
