Overview

GovStar seeks a senior AI Engineer to design, build, evaluate, and operationalize secure AI-enabled services for national security use cases. The role will focus on retrieval, prompting, guardrails, orchestration, model evaluation, data-source integration, governance, and production deployment of large-language-model capabilities inside approved government cloud boundaries.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Design and implement AI-enabled services using large language models and approved enterprise AI frameworks.
  • Develop retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), prompting, tool-use, orchestration, classification, extraction, summarization, and other model-backed workflows.
  • Integrate AI services with approved structured and unstructured data sources in the centralized data platform.
  • Develop evaluation frameworks for accuracy, relevance, groundedness, robustness, safety, and mission usefulness.
  • Implement guardrails and controls to reduce hallucination, inappropriate disclosure, prompt-injection risk, data leakage, and other AI-specific failure modes.
  • Design model governance, traceability, auditing, and human-in-the-loop patterns appropriate for sensitive government use cases.
  • Support AI capabilities such as investigative/hotline analysis, natural-language querying, trend and anomaly detection, link analysis, pattern recognition, automated tagging/classification, drafting, eDiscovery support, translation, and transcription.
  • Deploy and integrate solutions using approved services such as Azure OpenAI, OpenAI models, commercial LLM providers, and other enterprise AI frameworks where permitted.
  • Partner with platform and cloud engineers to productionize AI services using secure CI/CD, IaC, containerization, monitoring, and scalable deployment patterns.
  • Support pilot design, data-quality evaluation, AI-output validation, migration of existing AI tools, and transition from pilot to sustained operations.
  • Clearly communicate model limitations, technical tradeoffs, evaluation findings, risks, and recommendations to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Minimum Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Current residence in the United States and residence in either the Eastern or Central Time Zone.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DHS Public Trust.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a closely related technical field.
  • At least 10 years of relevant professional experience in software engineering, machine learning, artificial intelligence, data science, or related technical disciplines, including significant recent AI/ML engineering experience.
  • Expert-level Python development skills and demonstrated ability to build production software.
  • Hands-on experience building applications or services with large language models.
  • Experience with RAG, prompt engineering, embeddings/vector retrieval, orchestration, model evaluation, and AI guardrails.
  • Experience integrating AI services with enterprise data sources and APIs.
  • Experience deploying secure AI/ML workloads in cloud environments, with Azure experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of AI security, sensitive-data protection, model governance, auditability, and responsible AI engineering.
  • Strong system-design, problem-solving, documentation, and customer communication skills.

GovStar Expectations

  • Passion for solving complex technical challenges in support of U.S. national security objectives.
  • Willingness to learn, grow, and stretch outside established areas of expertise.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build trusted relationships with customers, partners, and teammates.
  • Proactive communication, self-direction, ownership, and the ability to start and lead initiatives without waiting to be told what to do.
  • Commitment to GovStar’s collective growth through knowledge sharing and participation in internal initiatives, innovation efforts, onboarding, and business-development support.
  • Professionalism, humility, curiosity, customer empathy, and a collaborative, team-first mindset.

Preferred Requirements

  • Experience with Azure OpenAI, Azure AI Foundry, Databricks, or equivalent enterprise AI platforms.
  • Experience with AWS Bedrock or other commercial enterprise LLM platforms.
  • Experience with agentic workflows, tool calling, structured outputs, multimodal AI, or advanced retrieval techniques.
  • Experience developing AI evaluation harnesses, red-team tests, observability, or continuous quality monitoring.
  • Experience with investigative, case-management, eDiscovery, document intelligence, translation, or transcription use cases.
  • Experience supporting U.S. federal government systems, ATO processes, or regulated environments.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and setting technical direction for AI engineering practices.

Relevant Technologies

  • Python; Azure OpenAI; Azure AI Foundry; OpenAI models/APIs; Databricks; RAG/vector search; enterprise LLM frameworks; REST APIs; PostgreSQL/Cosmos DB; Docker/Kubernetes; GitHub Enterprise; CI/CD; Azure.
