Senior Software Engineer – Agent Systems

We’re inviting an experienced, generalist AI software engineer to join our core team at Mother, building our first computer, the Mother I. We are looking for a self-starter who is a highly motivated and autonomous operator to join us at our Mountain View office.

Mother I is an AI supercomputer designed to run a wide range of open-source models locally. At its core is a software stack that makes it remarkably easy to run models and perform powerful tasks—directly on your own machine.

What you’ll do

• Design and build agent-driven systems and harnesses that plan, reason, and take action across complex workflows
• Develop robust APIs and services in Python and Rust, leveraging async/await and modern concurrency patterns
• Architect systems for tool use, memory, and multi-step reasoning, enabling agents to operate reliably in real-world environments
• Build and scale infrastructure for multi-agent coordination and orchestration
• Translate product ideas into intelligent, autonomous behaviors that power user-facing experiences on Mother I
• Work across the stack—from model interaction layers to backend systems and APIs

What you bring

• 4+ years of experience building and operating production-grade software systems end-to-end
• Experience designing backend systems that integrate with AI/ML models or complex decision-making logic
• Strong ability to go from ambiguous ideas to working systems (zero → one)
• Solid CS fundamentals and strong programming experience in Python
• Experience writing performant, concurrent, and distributed systems
• Comfort working on open-ended problems with evolving requirements
• A mindset of rapid experimentation, iteration, and validation

Nice to have

• Experience building or working with LLM-based agents, tool-use frameworks, or harness systems
• Familiarity with prompting, retrieval, memory systems, or evaluation of agent behavior
• Interest in autonomous systems, distributed systems, and human-AI interaction
• Strong ownership mindset with a bias for action
• Ability to quickly learn and apply new technologies in a fast-moving space
