The Role
As a Backend Engineering Intern, you'll help build and maintain the server-side of our platform—developing scalable NestJS services, integrating with databases, implementing business logic, and ensuring our infrastructure stays reliable, secure, and fast.

This is a hands-on internship where you'll contribute directly to production APIs, workflows, integrations, and data pipelines used by enterprise customers—while learning modern AI-assisted development practices inside a fast-moving SaaS startup.

You'll work closely with the Head of Technology, founding engineers, and frontend team to translate requirements into clean APIs and performant backend systems. Expect real ownership, real impact, and real learning.

What You'll Do
Backend Development (Primary Focus)

• Build and maintain backend services using NestJS + TypeScript (controllers, services, modules, providers)
• Implement REST API endpoints, validation, DTOs, middleware, and guards
• Work with MongoDB data models using Mongoose
• Help implement backend business logic for workflows, user permissions, analytics, and more
• Write clean, modular, and scalable TypeScript with proper typing and interfaces
• Maintain backend code quality with linting, testing, and GitHub workflows

API & Integration Work

• Collaborate with frontend developers to define clear API contracts and types
• Integrate internal and external services (e.g., auth services, file uploads, AI endpoints)
• Create schemas, aggregation pipelines, and optimized queries
• Assist with designing and maintaining data models and database structure
• Implement webhook systems for real-time event notifications

Database & Data Modeling

• Design and optimize MongoDB schemas for performance and scalability
• Write efficient queries and aggregation pipelines
• Implement data validation and business rules at the database layer
• Work with indexes, transactions, and data migration scripts

DevOps & Cloud

• Learn and contribute to our Azure-based infrastructure (App Services, Functions, Storage, Pipelines)
• Assist with deployments, logging, monitoring, and debugging production issues
• Participate in improving CI/CD workflows, environment configuration, and secrets handling

Collaboration & Process

• Follow Jira tasks and sprint cycles
• Participate in code reviews and weekly standups
• Work closely with engineering + product to ensure accurate backend implementation and fast delivery
• Use AI development tools like GitHub Copilot to accelerate development

Required Qualifications
Technical Skills (Must Have)

• ✅ Hands-on experience with Node.js + TypeScript
• ✅ Solid understanding of NestJS fundamentals (controllers, services, modules, decorators)
• ✅ Strong grasp of REST APIs, JSON, and async workflows (promises, async/await)
• ✅ MongoDB experience - You have built one or more projects using it, preferably with Mongoose
• ✅ Strong TypeScript skills - Understanding of interfaces, types, enums, dependency injection, and generics
• ✅ Git and GitHub proficiency (PRs, branches, reviews)
• ✅ Experience using GitHub Copilot or other AI dev tools

• Knowledge of database optimization (indexing, query performance)
• Previous experience with GraphQL or webhooks
