About the Role
We’re looking for a Volunteer Backend Engineer with solid experience in Fastify (Node.js) to help design, build, and scale our backend systems.
You’ll collaborate closely with our DevOps, frontend, and mobile teams to deliver performant, secure, and maintainable APIs that power real-world applications.
This is a volunteer opportunity — ideal for engineers eager to gain experience with production systems, work in an agile startup environment, and contribute to impactful African tech solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Design and implement RESTful APIs using Fastify and Node.js.
Integrate with PostgreSQL, and third-party APIs (payments, authentication, etc.).
Collaborate with the DevOps team to optimize deployment pipelines and system reliability.
Ensure scalability, performance, and security across backend services.
Write clean, maintainable, and testable code.
Participate in code reviews and contribute to continuous improvement.
Support the integration of backend logic with mobile and web frontends.
Preferred Skills & Experience
Proficiency with Node.js and Fastify framework (required).
Strong understanding of RESTful API design and database architecture.
Experience with PostgreSQL, Supabase, or Firebase.
Knowledge of authentication (JWT, OAuth) and authorization best practices.
Familiarity with Docker, GitHub Actions, and AWS (or similar).
Understanding of error handling, logging, and API documentation (Swagger/OpenAPI).
Excellent teamwork, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Bonus Points
Experience with payment systems, webhooks, or transaction processing.
Prior work with microservices or serverless architecture.
Familiarity with TypeScript and GraphQL.
Exposure to fintech or healthtech platforms.
