About the job
The Role
As the Founding Software Engineer, you will be a key player in bringing our product vision to life. You will be responsible for the end-to-end development of the product, working closely with our founders and technical advisors. This is a unique opportunity to be part of our early stage team, where your contributions will directly impact the direction and success of the company.
Key responsibilities:
- Product development: Take ownership of the end-to-end development of our software product (VREY.app) using Ruby on Rails. Ensure that the product is scalable, secure, and optimized for user experience.
- Technical leadership: Define the technical roadmap and architecture of the product, making critical decisions about the tech stack, tools, and processes together with our founders and supported by our senior technical advisor.
- Hands-on coding: Write clean, efficient, and maintainable code. Lead by example, setting high standards for code quality and best practices.
- Collaboration: Work closely with the founders to translate the product vision into technical requirements. Business requirements for the current version of the VREY.app have been defined and are continously validated with our customers.
- Iterative development: Implement and iterate on features based on user feedback and testing, rapidly prototyping new ideas to validate concepts.
- Scalability and performance: Design the application to handle growth, ensuring that it can scale as the user base expands.
- Security: Implement robust security practices to protect user data and ensure compliance with relevant regulations.
- Continuous integration and deployment: Maintain and optimize our CI/CD pipelines to streamline the development process and ensure smooth deployments.
- Mentorship and team building: As the company grows, help recruit, mentor, and lead a team of engineers to scale the product.
Your Profile
- Experience: 5+ years of experience in software engineering, with a strong focus on web development. Experience in a startup environment is highly desirable.
- Technical skills: Expertise in Ruby on Rails is essential. Experience with AWS and Terraform, databases (SQL, Postgres), and front-end technologies (vanilla JavaScript, HTML, CSS) is highly beneficial.
- Product-minded: You have a strong understanding of product development (SaaS context) and user-centered design. You are driven to build solutions that meet user needs and solve real-world problems.
- Startup mentality: You thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. You are a self-starter, comfortable with ambiguity, and willing to take on a wide range of responsibilities.
- Passion for climate tech: You are deeply motivated by the challenge of addressing climate change and are eager to apply your technical skills to make a positive impact. You are aware that this comes with navigating a regulated environment and finding pragmatic solutions.
- Leadership: You have the potential to grow into a CTO role as the company scales, with the ability to build and lead a high-performing engineering team.
- Language and location: You speak fluent English. German is a plus. You are based in Berlin or comfortable relocating to Berlin for this position.
Our offer
- Founding team role: The chance to join a startup at its inception and have a significant influence on its direction and success.
- Equity: A meaningful equity stake in the company, allowing you to share in the long-term success of the venture.
- Mission-driven work: The opportunity to work on a product that contributes to solving one of the most pressing challenges of our time - climate change.
- Growth opportunities: As the company grows, you will have the opportunity to take on increasing responsibilities and advance your career.
About us
At VREY we are finally bringing solar energy to the more than 3 million apartment buildings in Germany, where the rollout of photovoltaic (PV) systems is currently at only 0.2%. As an implementation partner and software provider, we support owners of multi-family homes in the new model of "Gemeinschaftliche Gebäudeversorgung", which was made possible this year by the German government's Solarpaket 1. Our goal is to make PV systems economically attractive and uncomplicated. To achieve this, we have developed a two-step approach:
- Project support: We take care of all the necessary steps from the initial customer inquiry to the commissioning of the system - including profitability calculations, technical planning, tenders and the development of measurement concepts.
- Software for smooth operations (VREY.app): We enable landlords to sell PV electricity to their tenants without becoming an energy supplier themselves. Our solution automates monthly billing, minimizes costs and creates transparency.
Future product developments of our Energy OS will make battery storage, heat pumps and electric cars in apartment buildings more flexible and profitable. This will give landlords and owners of these properties access to the energy market of the future.
If you are ready for a challenging and rewarding role, we look forward to receiving your application and getting to know you.
At VREY, we believe that diversity strengthens us as a company and society. No decisions are made on the basis of color, religion, ethnic or national origin, citizenship, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, or age during the hiring or employment process. VREY is committed to providing a safe workplace and will not tolerate discrimination or harassment of any kind.
Even if you don't meet all the requirements, don't hesitate to apply. If you are passionate about our mission and believe you can make a difference, we want to hear from you.
