About the job
Overview
Elaborate is a clinical intelligence platform on a mission to eliminate physician burnout by tackling the growing burden of the inbasket.
The problem: Clinicians want to engage with their patients, but the flood of daily messages makes meaningful and reliable communication nearly impossible. Patients feel the strain too, often waiting days for unsatisfying replies that barely address their needs.
At Elaborate, we cure the inbasket problem by preventing messages before they arise. Instead of relying on tools that draft reactive replies, such as call centers staff or LLM’s, our clinical research team has spent years mapping why these messages appear in the first place. Then we built a set of proprietary clinical protocols to offer a guided, innovative healthcare experience unlike anything available today.
Using patient's own health data, our clinical engine streamlines workflows for results management, referral processing, and visit preparation, freeing clinicians of time-consuming administrative work. With a directly embedded EMR integration, Elaborate allows doctors to focus on patient care rather than learnings new workflows or navigating to a different tab.
Trusted by leading health systems, academic medical centers, and multi-specialty groups, Elaborate reduces administrative burdens, enhances compliance, and improves patient communication. Key partners include Cedars-Sinai Health System, Community Health Network, and Austin Regional Clinic.
Backed by top investors like Tusk Ventures, Founder Collective, Bling Capital, and Arkitekt Ventures, and powered by a team of experts from Oscar Health, Mt. Sinai, Greenhouse, Syllable, Everly, Parsley Health, and Flatiron, Elaborate is transforming the healthcare experience.
Our vision is a healthcare system where technology intelligently directs patients to the best next steps. Join us in creating a future where healthcare is powered by personalization.
US-based applicants only please. Unfortunately, our enterprise contracts do not allow for hires outside of the United States.
The top qualities that we’re looking for:
You’re a self-starter who loves solving problems: You are excited to build and deploy. When you see something broken, you prototype a solution (sometimes solo, sometimes with partners) and attack the problem head-on. You maintain a bias to launch fast and balance that with a thoughtfulness about potential risks, tradeoffs, and downstream effects. You are excited to push code everyday that pushes the business forward, even if it sometimes involves a bit of gruntwork.
You’ve been a large part of a small team: You’ve worked at a startup before, and you’ve had significant ownership over a product. You are capable of directing the majority of your time and energy. You’re excited that there are not multiple layers of management above you, and you’re down to step up as needed. You have 0 ego—there is no work that is “below you”—and you’re excited to do what’s right to push the business in the right direction.
You are able to collaborate effectively with non-technical partners: You have experience collaborating with a cross-functional team and communicating decisions and tradeoffs to others. You’ve worked in messy, real-world domains (healthcare, finance, etc.) and appreciate that coding alone is insufficient to build a product that actually make a difference. You know how to simplify technical jargon and concepts so that others get the "so what." You are curious to hear the perspectives of other people on your team and operate under an assumption of best intent.
The type of work you'll do:
You will have a clear scope of work that we expect you begin contributing to by the end of week 2. Over the first few months of onboarding, you will come to own:
Product Integration: Creating, maintaining, and extending Elaborate’s product integrations with EHRs. This involves:
- building and debugging secure data pipelines that receive, process, and send patient data
- evolving our infrastructure and system architecture to scale with the company’s needs
- solving for data quality issues in our clients’ clinical datasets
- developing a solid monitoring and alerting strategy so that we have confidence in our integrations—and quickly triaging issues when those alerts tell us that something’s up
- sometimes, jumping on client-facing calls and working with external stakeholders
Clinical Data Maintenance and Structure: Create internal tools that help us manage our ever-growing volume of clinical data
Business Intelligence: Analyze our internal data ad external client data , in partnership with our CEO and product team, to evaluate client ROI and suggest future product directions
Security and Compliance: Work with our head of engineering to ensure our security and compliance posture is up-to-snuff. We use Vanta and Jamf, so maintenance is a relative breeze.
With time and seniority, you will have the opportunity to develop greenfield R&D prototypes as we expand our product offerings. Prove yourself as a trusted partner and the sky is your limit.
Most likely, you have:
- 4+ years of experience writing and shipping code to production; experience with the languages and technologies in our current stack is a big plus
- Taken a product or feature from idea to MVP, and then from MVP to maturity
- A deep understanding of full-stack architecture–you’ve stood up cloud infrastructure, built out APIs and read a Postgres query plan or two, but you can also sling some JavaScript when needed
- Proficiency with SQL and relational data modeling
- Ideally you have experience with our stack. We use: --> Our application layers are written primarily in Python (+ Django) on the backend and Typescript (+ NextJS) on the frontend --> We store data in Postgres, Redis, and S3. --> We monitor our applications with Datadog and Sentry --> Our infrastructure is built on AWS + Docker and Terraform, and we manage CI/CD through Github Actions
Bonus points if you have:
- Worked on a product with complex 3rd-party integrations and lived to tell the tale
- Worked in healthcare or a related field—double points if you have a favorite HL7 segment and know what an interface engine is
- Worked on a product or project where you closely collaborated with people outside of your immediate engineering team: subject matter experts, external clients, product designers, etc.
- Worked hands-on with any of the following:
- Cloud infrastructure / infrastructure-as-code / containerization
- Data pipelines / quality / normalization
- Distributed job queues
- CI/CD
- Prompt engineering + fine-tuning
