About the job
Are you passionate about climate solutions and ready to lead the development of next-generation wildfire prediction technology in a venture-backed startup?
About us: We are an early-stage spinout from the University of Cambridge with the mission to solve the problem of wildfires and enhance community climate resilience. We have created a cost-effective, ultra-granular, physics-driven simulator that delivers unprecedented accuracy in forecasting wildfire propagation across any landscape, anywhere in the world. We are now developing solutions to provide impacted stakeholders in the financial and other sectors with reliable data and actionable intelligence.
The role: We seek a Founding Engineer to help design, implement, optimise, and effectively communicate our wildfire solutions. This interdisciplinary role involves working closely with the founders, company-affiliated academics, customers, and software engineers to refine our simulator using geospatial data, physical models, and machine learning techniques, and to build a user-friendly platform that delivers data directly to our customers.
This role is for you if you’re a mission-driven builder with a track record of developing software products in fast-paced environments, eager to make a lasting impact on society by shaping not only our products but also the future of our company. You’re a well-rounded software or data engineer/scientist who thrives at the intersection of innovative physics modelling and data-driven technology, not afraid to tackle new challenges and build solutions you have never encountered before. You are adaptable, collaborative, and take full ownership of your work, with excellent communication skills to convey complex ideas clearly and effectively.
Key technical skills:
- Proficiency in Python, building data pipelines, and machine learning
- Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure) or high-performance computing
- Familiarity with geospatial data processing/visualisation
- Familiarity with C++ and CUDA
- Familiarity with API and front-end (e.g., Javascript, React, Streamlit) development
