Senior Backend Engineer (RoR)

We’re seeking a Senior Backend Engineer/Technical Lead to support us on our mission to build a borderless world. This role is perfect for someone who enjoys coding and mentoring in equal measure, with a keen eye on strategic technical direction. Join a close-knit team of engineers, product managers, designers, and UX researchers. Our remote collaboration spans multiple time zones, facilitated by tools like Slack, Notion, Linear, GitHub, and the Google suite. We serve our customers through a web app built with React, TypeScript, Webpack, NextJS, and other technologies, which communicates with a REST API built with Ruby on Rails, Postgres, and Redis. We are currently evaluating building parts of our applications using the latest Ruby on Rails frontend technologies such as Hotwire, Turbo and Stimulus. We use GitHub for version control and code reviews, Semaphore and Github Actions for CI/CD, Rollbar for production error tracking, and rely on Heroku for infrastructure management.

🎯 What You’ll Do

• Hands-On Coding:
  • Actively contribute to the code code, ensuring secure, efficient, and scalable solutions
  • Ensure security updates are timely and handle proofs-of-concept
  • Review code and provide actionable feedback to other developers
• Technical Leadership:
  • Lead technical discussions, guide technology choices, and develop our roadmap
  • Mentor and coach engineers, sharing knowledge and helping with career growth
  • Partner with product managers to ensure seamless project planning and execution
  • Oversee technical delivery, identifying and addressing any blockers or priorities
• Collaboration & Communication:
  • Engage with cross-functional teams, communicating technical concepts clearly
  • Work with product, design, and engineering to deliver high-quality features

🌟 What We’re Looking For

You’ll thrive in this role if you:

• Strong experience (8+ years) in backend development, especially Ruby on Rails and Postgres
• Familiarity with JavaScript frameworks (React, Typescript)
• Proven experience in technical leadership, with a track record of mentoring
• Excellent communication skills, able to bridge technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Fluency in English, both written and spoken, to succeed in our remote, partly asynchronous work environment.
