As the first Director of Engineering, you will be a leader in the engineering organization, responsible for the operational success, technical excellence, and professional development of multiple engineering teams. You should have a strong background in application architecture and design, along with proven people management skills. This role requires an individual who can effectively oversee multiple product teams, fostering collaboration and ensuring the successful delivery of high-quality products. You will work directly with engineering leadership to operationalize strategies for improving and scaling engineering and build an excellent and supportive engineering culture.
In this role, your responsibilities would include:
Lead and mentor a diverse team of engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
Oversee multiple product teams, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and maintaining high performance across all projects.
Conduct regular performance evaluations, provide constructive feedback, and facilitate professional development opportunities for team members.
Assist in scaling the organization by contributing to hiring efforts and helping to identify improvements in processes and workflows.
Provide expert guidance on application architecture and design, ensuring solutions are scalable, maintainable, and aligned with best practices.
Review and evaluate technical designs and architecture proposals, offering insights and recommendations for improvement.
Advocate for adopting best practices and assist in designing and implementing strategies to improve the organization's effectiveness.
Establish and uphold high standards for software quality, ensuring rigorous testing and validation processes are in place.
Required Skills:
8+ years of experience in software engineering, with a minimum of 3 years in a management or leadership role.
Previous work experience at a scaling startup.
Proven experience in application architecture and design, with a strong understanding of delivering high-quality software in a fast-paced startup environment.
Demonstrated ability to manage and mentor engineering teams, fostering a positive and productive work environment.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a focus on process optimization and operational excellence.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of engaging with technical and non-technical stakeholders and working cross-functionally with product, design, and business teams.
Preferred Skills:
Experience working in Elixir or other functional programming languages.
Experience working with TypeScript, React, GraphQL, or PostgreSQL.
Experience in regulated or high-compliance environments.
