Full Stack Developer II
Role: Full Time
Location: New York, NY
Team: Engineering
About Semsee:
We're a group of diligent coders, meticulous product managers, and design enthusiasts who are shaping the future of small commercial insurance.
Here at Semsee, we are building technologies that will help revolutionize the $120 billion small business insurance industry - an industry that is highly fragmented, heavily reliant on manual processes, grounded in old technology and full of customer friction. Our breakthrough platform is a workflow tool created for independent insurance agents to improve their productivity when selling to small businesses.
By modernizing this process, Semsee will significantly improve agency profitability with the potential of creating over $2 billion of value for the insurance industry. Moreover, we believe that our initial SaaS opportunity serves as a stepping stone into much larger business opportunities as our network of insurance companies (also known as carriers) & agencies expands.
Come join our rapidly growing startup! We are well-funded having been incubated by two large investors in the reinsurance space, one of them being D.E. Shaw & Co., L.P. We are looking for passionate folks to help take our company to the next level.
About the role:
The Full Stack Developer II will be a key member of the company responsible for core aspects of logic and functionality, interfacing with third-party systems, and ensuring reliability and performance throughout our stack. We want someone who can deliver a quality product in a timely fashion, communicating trade-offs made along the way. Oh, and we believe this engineer will be a great person to work alongside, eager to learn and adaptable to a quickly changing business.
We manage tasks in Jira, follow best practices for Git commits and pull requests, and eschew sprints in favor of Kanban. Our backend is written in Elixir (and uses Phoenix), which powers our API endpoints. Postgres is our main data store, and all of this is deployed on AWS.
In this role you will:
Write beautiful backend code to accomplish our core business needs
Compose queries that take full advantage of Postgres’ strengths
Use your HTML and CSS knowledge to create high-performance LiveView pages
Learn how to write code that is parallel, distributed, and fault-tolerant
Manage complex interactions with third-party systems at scale
Help design systems that embody excellent engineering practices
Your Qualifications:
- Our expectations of your performance scale with the experience you bring to the table. Ideally, a Developer II candidate has:
- Three to seven years experience as a primarily backend programmer
- Proficiency in at least one dynamic or functional programming language - Elixir is of course ideal, but coming from Ruby, Python, TypeScript, F#, Scala or others is fine too
- A solid understanding of underlying web technologies; from HTTP protocols to HTML, CSS, and setting up CSPs
- Aptitude to pick up a new language and frameworks
- Strong understanding of relational databases, indexing, and SQL queries
- Already know your way around git, and can work with agile sprints
- Love solving problems, and strive to improve processes and workflows and make others lives easier
- Take pride in writing code that is well-tested and documented for maintainability
- A team-first mentality, where you understand coding is only a fraction of what a developer needs to do to be successful
- Able to handle competing priorities in a dynamic, entrepreneurial environment
- Are authorized to work in the U.S.
Bonus points if you have:
- experience with application architecture and design
- knowledge of AWS and good security practices
- Insurance industry experience
- a good learning attitude and desire to grow
What we offer:
- Competitive Compensation: $100,000-$150,000 yearly salary
- Stock Options: Offered on a one-year cliff and four-year vesting period
- Growth Opportunity: Ground floor opportunity as an early member of the Semsee team
- Our Culture: An inclusive company culture that is being built intentionally to foster stimulating, healthy, meaningful and long lasting work relationships.
- Hybrid Distributed Workplace: Offices in Manhattan and Columbus, OH + Remote Team Members
- Time Off: 4 weeks (20 Days) + 9 company observed holidays; Total 29 Days/Year
- Benefits: 70% Funded Medical/Vision/Dental; 100% Funded Life Insurance; 401k, Roth IRA; Generous 12 Weeks Paid Baby Bonding Leave, +more
