Role Overview

Appsmith is an open-source, low-code platform that helps developers build applications quickly, usually within hours. Since its inception, Appsmith has gained significant traction, with over 10 million downloads, more than 30,000 stars on GitHub, and adoption by 10,000+ organisations across 150 countries.

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Engineering Manager to lead and manage two cross-functional engineering teams, Anvil and Query&JS.

The Anvil team focuses on creating a user-friendly, flexible, and scalable UI solution that empowers both technical and non-technical users to build dynamic applications with minimal coding. Additionally, the team leads the integration of AI-powered UI components, enabling seamless chatbot interactions and advanced AI functionalities within the platform. With a dual focus on the low-code UI build system and AI-driven user interface enhancements, the team ensures that users can create intuitive, intelligent, and responsive web and mobile interfaces. Their work allows for a more interactive, efficient, and scalable user experience, enhancing the overall capability of the low-code platform.

The Query&JS team is at the forefront of our mission to enable easy and effective app building. Users should be able to bring data from anywhere and achieve complexities of any scale with a simple, intuitive experience. This team is pivotal in creating an experience that inspires users to create rich and complex applications easily.

Key Responsibilities

You will be joining an agile and fully remote teams as an Engineering Manager. To us, this means your role extends beyond ownership of your day to day work; we expect you to embrace the broader picture — product vision, delivery, execution, and teams collaboration.

  • Lead, mentor, and coach two high-performing engineering teams to foster growth and development.

  • Conduct regular 1:1 meetings, performance evaluations, and career development discussions.

  • Collaborate with product managers, designers, and other cross-functional teams to define clear requirements, priorities, and goals.

  • Ensure timely delivery of high-quality software solutions by coordinating sprints, planning releases, and managing cross-team dependencies.

Qualifications

Must Have

  1. 5+ years of experience in software engineering with strong focus in frontend development using React and Redux

  2. 3+ years of experience managing engineering teams, with a proven track record of building and leading high-performing teams.

  3. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  4. Ability to handle ambiguity and adapt to rapidly changing business needs.

  5. Proven expertise in Agile development methodologies (Scrum), with a deep understanding of team dynamics and operational flow.

  6. Able to lead Agile teams with precision, fostering a culture of continuous learning and collaboration that drives both individual and collective growth.

Good to Have

  1. Experience as a full-stack software engineer

  2. Experience managing more than one cross-functional or distributed teams.

  3. Experience in RESTful API integration, including handling complex data sources and API security.

  4. Experience in SaaS 3rd party integrations

  5. Experience with LLMs and integrating AI models into web applications, particularly using Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) or similar AI frameworks

  6. Experience working with users.

Interview Process

  • Hiring manager: You will have a 60 minute introductory call with your hiring manager. We will be looking to understand whether you have the relevant experience. Be thoughtful about how you communicate the projects you have worked on and the challenges you have overcome. We are also looking to understand how you relate to the product and whether you connect with the problem statement. Please try building an app on the product before this call. Prepare some feedback on your experience with the product and your thoughts about it.

  • Technical Fit and Planning: You will have a 60 minute call with a member of this team who will ask you to solve a problem statement and translate it into code. We are looking to understand your approach to solving fuzzy problems and the approach you take in solving them. Be methodical in your approach, understand the problem well, optimise the solution, handle edge cases & write simple, readable code.

  • Communication and Collaboration: This round, led by a designer and/or a product manager, will focus on collaboration and communication. Expect questions about how you worked with a team to solve a challenging problem through teamwork and communication.

  • Culture Fit: You will have a 60 minute call with a founder who will try to better understand you as a person and whether you would thrive inside the culture at Appsmith. We are looking for candidates who deeply care about their work, take ownership & are always trying to get better.
