About the job

Manufacturing Engineer, Machining

The Manufacturing Engineer, Machining is responsible for the processes used to manufacture and inspect machined components for flight and developmental use.

This includes working with design engineering teams to create and execute a rigorous design process to ensure machined components are made on-time and to the highest possible quality. You will work directly with the Astranis machinists, contract manufacturers, and internal quality teams to ensure machined components are made to the highest possible quality standard, including ownership of all processes and tooling used on the factory floor.

The ideal candidate has experience across design and manufacturing of precision machined components, setting up and maintaining production processes with an emphasis on quality, and high attention to detail. The ideal candidate also has hands-on experience with machining and programming parts, and ability to roll up their sleeves and do whatever it takes to get the job done. If these sound interesting, this position might be for you!

Role

  • Work with design engineering teams to build quality into part designs and drive Design for Manufacturing (DFM), including participating in design reviews and performing tolerance stackup analysis.
  • Develop and qualify manufacturing and inspection processes, including performing process validation, documenting procedures, and supporting processes in production.
  • Write production procedures, work order templates, process specifications, and other build documents.
  • Work with supplier quality and contract manufacturers, to develop their manufacturing and quality processes and respond to questions and issues.
  • Evaluate non-conformances to determine root cause, create actionable items, and system improvements.
  • Own scheduling and prioritization for machined part production and inspection, including working closely with other Astranis teams and management to understand company and project priorities.
  • Assist in machining and programming operations as required for R&D and production.
  • Create, maintain and communicate detailed schedules and status updates.
  • Assist in designing and creating fixturing for production.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, or equivalent technical degree.
  • 2+ years of professional experience in CNC machining and programming.
  • Expert in GD&T and drawing reviews.
  • Mechanical design experience including creating solid models and prints.
  • Must be onsite 5 days a week.

Bonus

  • Experience with Fusion 360, Mastercam, or other CAM softwares.
  • Experience with 3D CAD software (Solidworks, NX, or similar).
  • Has worked with contract manufacturers to set up and qualify manufacturing and quality processes.
  • Hands-on experience reading and interpreting first article inspection reports, using precision hand tools, and implementing tolerance stackup analysis on parts.
  • Experience implementing MES/ MRP systems in a production environment.
