As DIMO grows we strive to provide individual owners control of their vehicle data and empower third party developers to utilize that data for innovation. As we strive towards that future, our need to decode more vehicle signals grows to serve a wider audience.

As a vehicle signal hacker, you’re ready to take on the critical role of testing & implementing new signals on a variety of vehicles to ensure compatibility. From reverse engineering, to leveraging the motivated DIMO community, to industry research, your role will be to reliably get more vehicle signals into production via CAN bus configurations. You’ll not only use our tools, but will also provide critical feedback into the development of those tools.

A Car hacker at DIMO has a truly deep understanding of OBD and CAN, understanding what each bit and byte on a noisy CAN bus means. You must be able to parse through CAN logs and pick out signals from noise, as well as understand how to make requests to different ECU’s and pick up the responses. Automotive industry experience is a likely requirement, as well as an understanding of reverse engineering. DIMO has a community that will be able to help in this process, so communication and organization skills are important as well.

In this technical, problem-solving role, you must be prepared to dive into the details, research new technologies, learn new tools, write some code, and trial/error DBC or PID decoding approaches. Then, you must be able to identify the best way to deploy new signals on the DIMO fleet of connected vehicles.

Duties / a day in the life:

• Identify specific vehicle signals DIMO needs to change the world for the better!
• Go through an initial OSINT (Open Source Intelligence Gathering) process to find ways of obtaining the identified signals. Ability to communicate with the DIMO community will be useful here.
• Reverse engineer signals using diagnostic tools and CAN logging. We have the ability to execute remote CAN dumps as well as custom PIDs with willing community members. In some cases we can facilitate physical access to target popular vehicles.
• Follow a process of Verification of CAN signals on actual vehicle products. Iterate to address issues.
• Using our template tooling, deploy the new signals to all applicable vehicles.
• Leverage your creativity and network or community connections to solve complex problems in unique ways.
• Help Provide reporting on specific signals / vehicles
• Monitor overall signals and vehicles to continuously target and prioritize what to decode
• Engage with the DIMO community around decoding efforts
• Help Customer Support with users that are having data issues.
