Job Description
The Software Engineer (Bioinformatics) will be responsible for developing, implementing, and improving algorithms for analyzing genomic data. A solid understanding of algorithm analysis, data structures, and scientific computing will enable the software engineer to deliver performant solutions that will support Othram's mission to enable human identification.
Responsibilities
- Develop algorithms and tools for analyzing genomic and genealogical data
- Implement algorithms for internal tools, and optimize runtime performance and results to meet company objectives
- Increase scalability of existing algorithms and tools as datasets grow
- Work with scientists and researchers to develop new algorithms for analyzing large datasets
- Evaluate performance of internal and external bioinformatics tools
- Develop data visualization techniques to provide insights into data patterns, user behavior, etc.
- Understand business objectives, and propose novel solutions and strategies to effectively meet those requirements
- Coordinate closely with product management and engineers to design, prove, and implement new algorithms, statistical models, and processes
Requirements
- Educational background computer science, software engineering, bioinformatics, or a related field
- Experience with at least one systems programming language (C or Rust) and one scripting language; we use Rust, Python and Bash
- Good understanding of theoretical performance of various algorithms and data structures (algorithmic complexity, runtime performance, etc.)
- Experience with bioinformatics, genealogy, and/or population genetics is a huge plus
- Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills
