About the job
We’re looking for a Senior Engineering Manager to join our backend team and lead the development of mission-critical systems built in Python and deployed on AWS using Kubernetes. The ideal candidate for this role should have a high sense of ownership, be comfortable mentoring engineers of all levels, have experience with distributed systems, and be able to reliably deliver complex technical solutions. This role reports to the Director of Engineering of Payments, Claims & Eligibility.
Responsibilities will include:
- Provide technical oversight and drive new features with a focus on Garner’s strategic mission
- Build a high-performance team by mentoring, providing feedback, and hiring.
- Continuously strive for quality while maintaining speed of delivery
- Balance between greenfield features and scaling existing systems
- Collaborate across disciplines by identifying bottlenecks and risks, proposing mitigation, and communicating tradeoffs
- Protect our users’ privacy and security through best practices
Ideal candidate has:
- 7+ years of hands-on experience, with a focus on distributed systems, real-time and batch data processing, data storage solutions, and message-oriented middleware
- 5+ years experience as an engineering leader with a track record of translating ambiguous business requirements into scalable solutions and new product features
- Strong leadership skills with an ability to inspire, motivate, mentor, and retain top engineering talent
- Proven ability to influence without authority (e.g. driving process improvements, spearheading architecture enhancements, etc.)
- Familiarity with medical insurance claims processing or healthcare data standards (e.g. HIPAA, EDI) is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with cloud infrastructure (e.g., AWS, GCP) and data infrastructure tooling, such as Kafka, Spark, or Flink.
- Strong sense of ownership and proactive problem-solving mindset
- A willingness to “roll up your sleeves” and do whatever is necessary to ensure company success
- Experience working in a rapidly evolving startup environment
- A desire to be a part of our mission to improve the U.S. healthcare system
What we look for at Garner:
- Mission First: Our mission is to transform our healthcare system, delivering high-quality and affordable care to all. Everything else is secondary.
- Expect Extraordinary: Our mission is audacious, so we will only succeed by producing exceptional results. We continually push ourselves and each other to new heights and beyond our comfort zones.
- Courageous Communication: Transparency and candor are imperative to realizing our potential as an organization and as individuals—even when uncomfortable. Many companies talk about these values. We live them.
- Supportive community: We know that people do their best work and learn the most when they feel genuinely supported and cared for. It’s also more fun that way.
The target salary range for this position is: $220,000.00 - $250,000.00 . Individual compensation for this role will depend on a variety of factors including qualifications, skills and applicable laws. In addition to base compensation, this role is eligible to participate in our equity incentive and competitive benefits plans.
