The Opportunity

Abnormal Security’s Head of Legal is looking for the first Product Counsel to join Abnormal’s growing legal team. As Product Counsel, you’ll build a strong front-line legal partnership and platform for our engineering, product, security, and go-to-market teams.

You’ll provide pragmatic and business-minded legal, privacy, security, and compliance guidance to stakeholders primarily in the Engineering, Product, Security, and go-to-market teams for helping Abnormal deliver products that are compliant with laws and contractual commitments; focusing on feature development, product launches, and compliance efforts such as open source management and export control. In addition, you will play an instrumental role in building and shaping the legal gating and support components of the product development and review life-cycle function Abnormal. This includes identifying trends and potential impacts on business activities and adapting existing laws to new technologies. We’re looking for a lawyer who does not run away from ambiguous questions, who embraces cross-functional teamwork, and who enjoys the thrill of working hard to help prepare an amazing product for shipment!

What you’ll do:

In this role, you will work on interesting and complex legal/regulatory issues at the intersection of cybersecurity, privacy, enterprise software, and cloud office communication systems. You’ll support product development initiatives and go-to-market programs to deliver strategic value and pragmatic risk management solutions to our product designers, builders, and maintainers.

You will also contribute to the Abnormal Legal Team strategy and growth roadmap; you’ll have opportunities to train and mentor the amazing people we bring on board as future Abnormal legal team members.

Your ability to do the following will drive your success as Product Counsel:

  • Ensure that our products are designed to comply with relevant laws and regulations, meet our contractual obligations, and align with our security requirements.
  • Plan and implement open source publishing and compliance programs
  • Manage export compliance reviews
  • Serve as Legal team lead for security and privacy audit activities such as SOC 2, ISO, HIPAA, PCI, FedRAMP, etc.
  • Partner with privacy stakeholders in identifying privacy risks and in conducting privacy impact assessments
  • Build scalable and effective processes to enable engineering, product, and marketing teams to provide legal advice and guidance throughout the product lifecycle; processes should support strategic business partnership to such teams.
  • Lead and coordinate review of new product features and designs with information security, privacy, and other legal and risk reduction functions.
  • Develop a product review framework that enables legal assessments and guidance at appropriate and optimal points in a product life cycle.
  • Be an in-house expert and resource on issues related to privacy and data protection around the world.
  • Collaborate with commercial legal team on common product- and compliance-related contracting and negotiation points such as security, privacy, and regulatory issues - specifically by providing SME deal support, playbook collaboration, and other crossover legal team projects
  • Support our in-bound technology licensing and acquisition efforts by drafting, reviewing, and negotiating agreements with key third party vendors.
  • Monitor developments in regulations that apply to our products and advise internal teams as needed
  • Create and deliver training programs for product, engineering, sales, legal commercial and marketing teams re privacy and product compliance issues

Experience you’ll need:

  • 4-5+ years of relevant legal, in-house and/or law firm experience
  • JD / US law degree and bar admission in good standing in at least US one state
  • Proven success working effectively across business teams and functions to resolve business and risk management issues while considering many non-legal variables, such as culture, brand, communications, government relations, tax, revenue recognition, insurance, finance and other functional areas
  • Ability to quickly absorb, evaluate and respond to new and novel issues and to craft creative legal or business solutions
  • Solid knowledge of software licensing, intellectual property, and global privacy and data protection laws
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills, effective communication skills, quick learner, and a strong sense of initiative
  • Ability to prioritize and manage simultaneous projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Comfortable diving into technical details and able to quickly learn new technologies
  • Familiarity working across the globe, to support multiple time zones and cultures
  • Experience working in a start-up atmosphere is highly desirable
  • External privacy and/or security certification(s) (e.g., CIPP/E, CISM, CCSK) is a plus
  • Proficiency with Google Docs, Gmail, Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Pro, DocuSign, Salesforce, CLM and other Legal Ops tools, and Slack
