Food and beverage safety remains a multibillion problem with product recalls by the U.S. FDA skyrocketing 93 percent since 2012 and 25-30 incidents occurring globally each week. The average direct cost to a company per recall is $10 million, not including sale losses, deaths/illnesses, and the hit on their reputation. These impacts continue to grow despite being addressed by an ecosystem of technology and service providers. Xibus Systems is a newly formed start-up based at Greentown Labs in Somerville. Based on IP from MIT, we have the potential to disrupt the food quality and safety industry testing for pathogens, allergens and spoilage organisms faster, cheaper and in more places than has been possible before. It’s a multibillion dollar industry addressing a multibillion dollar opportunity, in addition to the public health costs and food waste inefficiencies that would also be mitigated. More reliable, faster, cheaper and more accessible solutions are needed to mitigate billions of direct and indirect cost.
