Smart Planet is an engineering and intellectual property company with patents on new paper/paperboard packaging materials that are designed to be fully compatible with paper recycling systems. For decades, coated paper/paperboard packaging such as paper cups and takeout trays have been sent to the landfill because the plastic coating is incompatible with paper recycling systems. There are 330 billion paper cups discarded per year globally, and most wind up in the landfill. It's a complete waste of valuable fiber materials that could otherwise be recovered and recycled into new paper products. This affects the QSR Markets (e.g. McDonald's, Starbucks, Burger King) as well as the CPG Markets especially frozen foods and candy markets (e.g. Nestle, Mondelez, Unilever).

Smart Planet has developed EarthCoating, a barrier coating utilizing a mineral blend formulation, to achieve the sustainabilty goals in packaging that have be desired by the consumers, brands, and governments for years. Packaging such as paper cups and takeout trays with EarthCoating are fully compatible with conventional paper recycling. Packaging with EarthCoating performs just as well as a 100% plastic coating, however reduces plastic, and receives recycling certifications so recyclers can recover these materials profitably, reduce landfill waste, and create closed loop processes.

For example, in Australia, Burger King has switched over all hot and cold paper cups to EarthCoating through Detpak's RecycleMe program. Paper cup with EarthCoating, collected in recycling, are now being converted into copy paper.

Smart Planet has licensed the technology to leading packaging manufacturers such as Huhtamaki, Detpak, G3 Enterprises. The leading authorized supplier of paper/paperboard with EarthCoating is Westrock Corporation, one of the world's largest papermill groups.

With the licensing/royalty model, the solution can scale up globally and finally address this paper waste crisis.
