A rhino is killed in South Africa every 22 hours such that they are endangered and on the verge of being extinct. The Cape has been facing water problems for the past few years. Environmental degradation is a major concern as well as deforestation which destroys animal habitats and risks the survival of those species. Keeping an eye on those natural resources takes a lot of effort and costs a lot of money. In our national parks, rangers travel on foot and their lives are at risks from poachers and wild animals. keeping an eye on our water resources is difficult and expensive. it is the cost and risk that are a problem when trying to make sure our natural resources are well looked after. SanParks and other departments use helicopters and fixed-wing airplanes to monitor our natural resources and that is very expensive as helicopters typically cost around R10 000 to R20 000 per hour. The other alternative is to use ground means like walking and cars is tedious and extraneous so the results of the work end up being sub-par.
The Sentian drone is a large scale aircraft capable of flying over 1000km non-stop at speeds of up to 300km/h while carrying a payload of 15kg. This is the first of its kind designed and built in Africa (South Africa). The aircraft furthermore has the ability to take off and land vertically like a helicopter with the added capability of hovering as well. Using the drone reduces cost down to around R3000 per hour which is far less than a helicopter. Our drone can be used to monitor game reserves and dam levels around the country to ensure that all is well. Since it can takeoff and land like a helicopter, it can be used in the middle of a jungle since the rangers won`t need a runway, further reducing cost. It will also be used to deliver medicine of up to 15kg to the rangers on the ground if they find a sick or injured animal. It does all this autonomously so they is no need for that much supervision.
